§ Joash Woodrow (1927-2006) Four Princes pastel 46 x 61cm Provenance: With 108 Fine Art For the notoriously reclusive and enigmatic artist, Joash Woodrow, art was not simply a hobby or a means to make money, but an obsession that ultimately eclipsed all else in his life, perhaps to his detriment. The youngest of eight siblings born to Polish-Jewish parents, Woodrow completed his training at Leeds College of Art and, later, at the Royal College of Art. Shortly after his graduation, however, Woodrow suffered a catastrophic nervous breakdown and cloistered himself within the safety and familiarity of his childhood home in Chapel Allerton, Leeds. Essentially isolated from the outside world, Woodrow embarked on a lifelong project, producing thousands of paintings and drawings. As Woodrow entered old age, entombed by teetering towers and ever-mitosing stacks of works, a fire at his Chapel Allerton home convinced him to move into sheltered accommodation, on the strict proviso that his family would look after his works, now concealed beneath a dark veil of dust and soot. It was a chance discovery by artist Christopher P. Wood in 2001 that led to the public unveiling of Woodrow’s work. Browsing a second-hand bookshop, Wood happened upon a rare edition of the Victorian Magazine of Art publication. Leafing through the contents, Wood found that the previous owner had meticulously reworked every page using collage, paint and drawing. Impressed by the works and noting that the copy had belonged to a Joash Woodrow, Wood showed the magazine to Andrew Stewart, a friend, conservator and gallery-owner. Similarly captivated, Stewart contacted the Woodrow family, who invited him to view the collection in Leeds. Arriving, he found a wellspring of hitherto unseen works, eking and creeping from every crevice of the abandoned home. Following a lengthy process of cleaning and restoring the paintings and drawings, in 2002, Woodrow’s first exhibition was hosted by 108 Fine Art Gallery, Harrogate, and shortly thereafter, by Leeds Art Gallery. Woodrow’s exceptional body of work was met with widespread critical and commercial praise and his reputation as one of the greatest undiscovered talents of the 20th century was cemented.
