Betty Woodman Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1930 - d. 2018

Betty Woodman was born in 1930 in Norwalk, Connecticut and she grew up outside Boston. She studied pottery at the School for American Craftsmen, Alfred University, Alfred, N.Y. In 1952 she traveled to Italy and worked with Giorgio Ferrero, a painter and Leonello Fallacare, a sculptor. Both were making pottery for a living. She was enormously influenced with the making majolica pottery within a Mediterranean tradition, but with inspiration drawing from various other cultures world wide. Since 1967 she has maintained a residence in Italy as well as in Colorado and in New York City.Woodman’s earthenware forms are brightly colored with loosely applied decorative glazes. While her vessels have functional roots, they are clearly sculptural objects with emphasis on plasticity of clay as the vital medium of choice for this artist. Her works are owned by museums and collectors worldwide and her exhibition record is extensive.
