      MARCIA OAKES WOODBURY Seated Dutch Child with a Bowl and Spoon. Watercolor, gouache and color pastels on paper, 1903. 325x265 mm; 12 3/4x10 1/2 inches. Signed and dated "Volendaam 1903" in ink, lower recto. Woodbury (1865-1913), who was married to the artist Charles Woodbury in 1890, traveled frequently to Europe at the turn of the century and incorporated scenes from these travels--Holland in particular--in many of her works.

      Marcia Oakes Woodbury (ME, 1865-1913), Small Boy watercolor on paper, study of a Dutch child eating carrots, signed and dated lower left "M.O. Woodbury July '91," framed and matted under glass. SS 14.25 x 9 in. DOA 21 x 15.5 in. Ms. Woodbury married Charles Woodbury and they honeymooned in Europe in 1890. She was especially attracted to Holland and became known for her figural studies in pastel and watercolor. Some slight smudge to mat; shadow mark of mat on paper. Not examined out of the frame.

      Little Dutch Girl Signed and dated "Marcia Oakes Woodbury 94" l.l. Watercolor and gouache on paper/board, 25 1/2 x 15 1/2 in. (64.7 x 39.3 cm), framed. Condition: Toning, not examined out of frame. N.B. Woodbury studied art in the United States and Europe. In Boston, she studied with Charles Woodbury, whom she later married. Woodbury European travels took her to Holland and to the Laxar School in Paris. Her visits to Holland were particularly influential, as it allowed her to study the work of the Old Masters. She also painted several images of Dutch children and wrote commentaries on Flemish painters. Her works were exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston after her death.

      pastel/paper, 24" x 18", signed, very nicely framed, exhibition label and Vose Galleries label verso. Woodbury studied with her husband, painter Charles Woodbury. The two were married in 1890, and honeymooned in Holland, among other places in Europe, and that subject became a significant source of inspiration for her work thereafter. She visited Holland many times later, painting Dutch children. She was a member of the New York Women's Art Club and the Boston Watercolor Club. She exhibited at the Boston Art Club, Art Institute of Chicago, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and the Boston Museum of Fine Art. This is an outstanding example of this artist's work.
