Naval painter, Etcher, Painter, Water color painter, b. 1864 - d. 1940

(b Lynn, Massachusetts, 1864; d 1940) American Painter and Illustrator. Charles Herbert Woodbury’s artistic talent was apparent from an early age; he began sketching at the age of six, sold his first oil painting at fifteen and became the youngest ever member of the Boston Art Club at just seventeen. Woodbury’s contributions to the field of art education were immense, he taught at a number of institutions and composed a many instructional treatises. His summers were spent in Ogunquit, Maine where he taught at his own school and was influential in creating a strong art community. Like Winslow Homer, another New England painter with an affinity for summers in Maine, he preferred "to work out his salvation with little help from others in his profession". BIOGRAPHY: Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, an industrial city about ten miles north of Boston, Charles Woodbury remains among the most influential artists to work in Ogunquit, Maine and in Boston. He taught more than 4,000 students including ones at Wellesley College, had more than 100 solo exhibitions, and wrote three widely read art education books. He remains a strong influence on art education.Woodbury was from a comfortable, well-established family. He sold his first oil painting when he was 15 and at age 17 in 1884, was the youngest person ever elected to the Boston Art Club. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and credited Ross Turner, his watercolor instructor, as launching his painting career. As a young resident painter of Lynn, he was a leader among his artist colleagues in the formal application of paint in beach and marsh scenes, a unique subject for that time. Immediately after graduating from MIT, he set up a studio at 22 School Street in Boston near Charles Green, his close friend and painting colleague. They determined to make a living only from their painting, and they succeeded. His formal art training began in 1890 when he, a newly married man, enrolled in the Academie Julian in Paris and stayed for a year. Returning to the Boston area, he became a prominent plein-air painter and living until 1940 embraced Impressionism.

Charles Herbert Woodbury (1864 - 1940) Oil on Canvas, Signed Lower Right, Measures (12 x 17 inches) w/frame (16 x 20 inches) Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, an industrial city about ten miles north of Boston, Charles Woodbury remains among the most influential artists to work in Ogunquit, Maine and in Boston. He taught more than 4,000 students including ones at Wellesley College, had more than 100 solo exhibitions, and wrote three widely read art education books. He remains a strong influence on art education. Woodbury was from a comfortable, well-established family. Immediately after graduating from MIT, he set up a studio

Woodbury" on stretcher, "Coe Kerr Gallery, New York, NY" label on reverse of frame, 17 in. x 21 in., framed, overall 25 1/4 in. x 29 1/4 in. x 3 1/2 in.; accompanied by paperwork from Vose Galleries and Coe Kerr Gallery. (2 pcs.) Provenance: Estate of the artist; Vose Galleries, Boston, MA; Coe Kerr Gallery Inc., New York, NY; Estate of Caroline P. Ireland Note: Charles Woodbury was a prolific painter born and raised in Lynn, Massachusetts. While studying as a mechanical engineering student at MIT, he began exhibiting his paintings at the Boston Art Club. For six months Woodbury studied painting at the Academie Julian in Paris. After he returned to New England, he founded the Ogunquit Art Association in Ogunquit, Maine where he became one of the most sought-after art teachers. He was president of the Boston Watercolor Society and became a member of the National Academy of Design in New York in 1907. His plein air paintings capture the natural beauty of the New England coast where he painted in “verbs, not nouns.” The lot offered here showcases one of Woodbury’s often visited subjects: women relaxing on the coast. In it, the serene beach goers gaze at their gentle shadows, letting the sand fall through their fingers. Woodbury depicts the scene with a delicate hand, using an impressionist palette to explore the play of light and darkness on the shore. Ref.: Vose, Abbott and Robert C. Vose III. Charles H.
