In 1868, the New York Evening Post noted of the present work, "Mr. Wood has painted to order a little figure picture called 'Private Lunch.' It shows a little...bootblack eating a watermelon at one of the cheap stands and looking out anxiously over his shoulders for intruders. It gives one of the aspects of city life in summer." Provenance: William H. Brune, Baltimore, Maryland, 1857 Fred D. Bentley Sr., Marietta, Georgia, by 1993 Acquired by the present owners by 2004 Exhibited: Auburn, Alabama, Aubun University, The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art, Auburn Collects: The Noel and Kathryn Dickinson Wadsworth Collection, March 13 - May 21, 2004, pl. 5, p. 19, illus. The sitter is Mrs. Catherine Norton Nicholas Brune (1830-1894), the wife of William H. Brune, a wealthy Baltimore merchant who was the brother of John Christian Brune, Thomas Waterman Woods' chief patron in Baltimore. It is very typical of the small scale portraits done by Wood during his Baltimore tenure. William Brune sent payment of $100 to Wood on March 21, 1857 for this and a portrait of John Christian Brune's wife. Wood did many Brune family portraits and it was not unusual for him to do multiple versions for other family members. 19th Century American Oil On Canvas Painting By Thomas Waterman Wood, Signed "T.W. WOOD" Portrait of Sallie Anderson in the garden picking blossoms. Oil on canvas, the stretcher inscribed "Sallie daughter of Garret Myers Anderson & Leah Louise (Sloat) Anderson, sister of Robert Ward Anderson;" the reverse of the frame inscribed "Sarah Louise Anderson Painted in the Anderson's garden at Hackensack New Jersey;" a paper label affixed to the reverse of the frame inscribed "Inscription on back of old canvas: 'S.L. Anderson July 20, 1854." Size: 17 x 14 in. in an oval gilt gesso frame. About the Artist: Born in 1823, Thomas Waterman Wood grew up in Montpelier, Vermont. He began his career as a portrait painter, and like many other artists of his day he took extended trips to Europe to see and study the great works of art there. He studied portrait painting with Chester Harding in Boston during 1846-47, and later worked in Quebec, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore until 1858. He then decided to move south and settled in Nashville, Tennessee, and then in Louisville, Kentucky, until 1866. After painting a series of three pictures dealing with the role of blacks during the Civil War, Wood won election into the prestigious National Academy of Design and served as its president. He later moved to New York City and spent summers in Montpelier, where he founded the T.W. Wood Gallery and Arts Center, one of Vermont's oldest art galleries. He died in 1903. Examples of his work hang in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
