Robert (1889) Wood Sold at Auction Prices

Landscape painter, b. 1889 - d. 1979

English artist Robert Wood immigrated to America in 1910, settling in Illinois as a farm hand. He had a restless spirit and left his job to live a life on the trains, painting the landscapes of the various areas he visited across the United States. Robert Wood's prints depicted natural settings, with specific emphasis on the seasons and giving the viewer a glimpse into a less industrialized time.

Artist Robert Wood also painted seascapes during his travels, and preferred to do his sketching and painting outside to be connected to his subject. After moving to Woodstock, New York in 1948, he became inspired by the Catskill Mountain region. Robert Wood painting values have continued to increase as collectors hark back to simpler times and memories of pleasant locations. In 1923, Wood relocated from England to San Antonio where he studied with renowned painter Jose Arpa and mastered capturing the majesty of the Texas Hill Country. Bluebonnet Landscape stands out not only for its size, but its Impressionistic treatment of the Texas landscape, similar in style to works by Texas Impressionist Julian Onderdonk. Wood’s work inhabits the pre-war period of Texas art, and was influenced by Julian Onderdonk, Jose Arpa and the early Texas Impressionists. Wood was influential in training artists of the next generation, including Porfirio Salinas, who Wood trained to paint bluebonnets, which Salinas did to great success and acclaim in the post-war years.
