        Wood (Henry Joseph)

        Est: £200 - £300

Wood (Henry Joseph) Wood (Henry Joseph) Group of autograph and typed letters signed by the British conductor, addressed to various recipients and covering various topics, from giving advice to a musician ("I should strongly advise you to remain with the Phillips Opera Company: never mind how small the salary is: it is regular, and constant engagements are so few and far between; moreover the competition is, it seems to me, worse than it was three or five years ago. Do try to sing to Mr Wiliam Boosey, as I should very much like you to sing at the Promenade Concerts next season-1920", 12 August 1919) and rejecting invitations ("I am sorry to say that I do not know of anyone who could give a lecture on Russian music...As far as I am concerned I am afraid I really could not manage it, because I have refused so many times of late years to give lectures", 1 November 1915) to music matters ("I quite agree with you as regards new Wagner selections. They are badly needed, and I have gone to considerable expense and trouble in scoring one or two and having the band parts copied, but concert managements do not often ask for them, as they naturally have to judge of things to some extent from the amount of applause a piece receives. For instance, the Faust Overture, which I love, is received very coldly", 12 March 1925"; "I am most interested in...the vibration of an air particle in a Tenor Trombone note. I have taken the liberty of sending you Mr Arthur Falkner...He is the best and most beautiful Tenor Trombone player we have ever had in London", 26 February 1932), v.s. 1895-1942 (13)
