Grant Wood Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Commercial artist, Draft draughtsman, Illustrator, b. 1891 - d. 1942

Artist Grant Wood was a social realism painter whose work stirred his audiences and helped inspire a movement. He is best known for his work American Gothic, a painting that has been interpreted in many ways by critics, the public, and the artist himself. The American-born artist created works of art inspired by Flemish and German painters but soon found and held his own art form. Grant Wood's impressionist art featuring small-town life, Midwestern landscapes, and historical landscape paintings was soon put aside and he began to focus on realism and regionalism.

Grant Wood was an artist, but also a jeweler and designer; a true craftsman who experimented with various forms of art. His impressionist art for sale still continues to inspire while forcing its audience to see the sometimes hidden humor in his work. Regionalist and Americana collectors can buy American paintings for sale online and at auction to express their love of all things American.

The colors were applied by Grant Wood's sister, Nan Wood Graham. The Associated American Artists commissioned Grant Wood to produce a series of four lithographs for distribution to commemorate their fifth year in business - 1939. For this project, Wood recruited his sister Nan Wood Graham (the female likeness in American Gothic) to color each lithograph in watercolor by hand. The result was four still life compositions titled Wild Flowers, Tame Flowers, Fruits and Vegetables. Sources say it took three years to complete the one thousand prints. They were offered by mail order for $10 each. The AAA was founded by Reeves Lewenthal in 1934 with the idea of bringing art by prominent American artists into the homes of everyday people at a time when original artwork was out of reach for many.
