(1885-1956) A NORTH AFRICAN^ POSSIBLY A BASKET WEAVER titled l.l. numbered u.l. 23 oil on paper 54.0 x 36.0 cm / 21 1/4 x 14 in unframed^ glazed Wolfsfeld~s trips to Turkey and Morocco - made while he was Professor of Painting & Etching at the Berlin Academy - resulted in a number of sketches such as these^ where |the figure stands successfully in oil isolated against a blank background| (1). Il foglio è pubblicato nella Jahresmappe für die Graphische Kunst per il 1913 della Gesellscahft für Vervielfaeltigende Kunst di Vienna con il titolo e altre indicazioni tipografiche in basso. Intorno al 1908 Wolsfeld fu a Roma, in contatto anche con Otto Greiner, cui dedicò un foglio, I due amici che rappresenta due mendicanti romani dell'epoca (n. 23 del catalogo Furness). Alcuni fogli su questi temi furono poi editi nel 1920 nella cartella Bettler, che racchiudeva rappresentazioni di destituzione sociale. Il foglio che presentiamo si apparenta a quelli della serie, un tema sempre molto caro a Wolfsfeld. Successivamente W. si dedicò a viaggiare in Spagna e in Africa del Nord e i temi delle sue incisioni e pitture trattarono temi locale di forte connotato verista, illuminati da un vivo interesse per il farsi doloroso della vita. Accanto a questi, molti i lavori di tema giudaico ed ispirati alla Bibbia. Nel 1939 Wolfsfeld per sfuggire alle persecuzioni naziste si trasferi in Gran Bretagna dove visse fino alla morte, pur seguitando a viaggiare e lavorare molto. Si aggiunge: Karl Sterrer (Vienna 1885-1972), Schwestern (Sorelle). 1918 Litografia a colori. mm 435x270. Foglio: mm 560x450.
