    Otto Friedrich Wolff (1855 Oschatz - 1940 Munich): Expulsion from paradise Archangel at the gate to the Garden of Eden, 1896, Charcoal Technique: Charcoal on Paper, mounted on Cardboard Inscription: indistinctly signed lower left and indistinctly signed lower right, verso inscribed on an old label Date: 1896 Description: The bright figure of the archangel stands upright and stern before the gates of paradise and gazes into the barren wasteland. In the foreground, naked and in rags on the hard rock, crouch Adam and Eve. The first humans had violated God's prohibition and feasted on the fruit of the tree of knowledge. The punishment for this followed swiftly, the expulsion from the heavenly Garden of Eden into the hardships of the world. Date: c. 1890 Description: One is reminded of the famous depictions of the "Temptation of St Anthony", which have been executed in large numbers since the Gothic period by renowned artists such as Hieronymus Bosch, Martin Schongauer and Matthias Grünewald, and later by Salvator Rosa, Max Beckmann, Max Ernst and Salvador Dali. The pious monk in religious contemplation is not even tempted by the beauty sitting directly in front of him and gently touching the person praying. The saint's gaze is fixed on the large cross and renounces all temptation in its vicinity. Description: As a literary motif, the child murderer has achieved sad fame, not least through Goethe's Faust. But we certainly do not see Gretchen in this portrayal, who in Goethe's drama finally attains divine redemption. No, this child murderer, who still cradled her infant in her arms in remorse, is pulled into the fire by winged demons. Whether purgatory as the destination for the probably unbaptized child, or hell for the poor sinner is uncertain here. Paper browned. Description: The term "evil siblings" immediately brings to mind the famous pair of brothers Cain and Abel, whom the artist, who has mainly used biblical motifs, shows here. But the biblical narrative of this first murder in history tells of Cain's murder out of envy of his younger brother Abel. The fact that there is talk here of two "evil" ones at any rate leaves room for wide speculation. Even the figure of an angel disappearing in the thick smoke doesn't quite fit into this story and has to be interpreted specially.     Otto Friedrich Wolff (1855 Oschatz - 1940 München), Praying monk is seduced by a girl, 19th century, Charcoal Technique: Charcoal on paper Size: 34,4 x 51,7 cm | 13 1/2 x 20 1/3 in Inscription: lower right inscribed and signed: "Verführung. O.Wolf Oschatz." Condition: Good original condition, paper originally mounted on cardboard, paper with small tears at margins. Description: One might think of the famous depictions of the "Temptation of St. Anthony", which were executed in greater numbers from the Gothic period onwards, by renowned artists such as Hieronymus Bosch, Martin Schongauer and Matthias Grünewald, and later by Salvator Rosa, Max Beckmann, Max Ernst and Salvador Dali. The pious monk in religious contemplation does not allow himself to be tempted by the beauty sitting directly in front of him, which even gently touches the praying person. The saint's gaze is firmly directed towards the large cross and renounces all seduction in his vicinity.
