    Byron B. Wolfe (1904-1973) 1966 This three-piece lot illustrates the working career of Kansas artist and illustrator Byron Wolfe. It does so by demonstrating the artist's processes from study to finished work, and through the synopsis Sketchbook of Byron B. Wolfe, printed in 1972 as an edition of only 250 volumes, this one being signed and inscribed by Wolfe with his designation as member of the Cowboy Artists of America. Each image measures 10 x 15, sheet is 16 x 20 inches. Wolfe (1904 - 1973) Make Your Mark 1965 The two original works by Byron Wolfe include, from the artist's sketchbook, an 8 x 10 watercolor rendering of an Old West smithy in his shop with horse shoes, hames bell rack, forge, anvil and tools, offering up a forged iron cattle brand for a cowboy's consideration. This preliminary watercolor is signed and dated lower left with date of 1965 as is the much larger and more finished oil painting of this same composition. The painting signature includes the artist's brand. The mat of the watercolor is inscribed with the painting's title, 'Make Your Mark' and the designation 'From the Sketch Book of Byron Wolfe' Canvas measures 18 x 24 with a framed size of 24 x 30 and the watercolor sight size is 7.5 x 10 with a framed size of 15.25 x 18.25 inches.

Medicine men accompanied by buffalo scouts searched for the herd, with many small rituals by the medicine man.

Forsyth and scouts dug in on a sandy island on the Arickaree – he said ‘I shall die today, my war bonnet has lost it’s protective medicine! His food was lifted with an iron tool. Roman Nose unaware of this ate some of the bread, unable due to time to perform purification rites. He lead the charge and was shot and died at sundown.

Next the Indians made horse raids on his Indian enemies. This was a game and a great status symbol, a sign of great bravery – to steal a war horse or buffalo horse from the enemy, especially if the enemy was not killed in the stealing.

Roman Nose unaware of this ate some of the bread, unable due to time to perform purification rites. He lead the charge and was shot and died at sundown.

Next the Indians made horse raids on his Indian enemies. This was a game and a great status symbol, a sign of great bravery – to steal a war horse or buffalo horse from the enemy, especially if the enemy was not killed in the stealing.

NOTE – The Cheyenne honored Kit Carson with the name “VIH-HIU-NIS” which means LITTLE CHIEF for his great skills in tracking a party of crows who expected to be attacked from the north. Kit attacked from the south. This was a skillful maneuver and Kit and his men won the fight.

NOTE – When meat parfleches were folded flat, the herd had to be located for the start of a hunt. Ceremonials, the ‘Offering of the pipe, to the four great directions’ for a fat hunt. Medicine men accompanied by buffalo scouts searched for the herd, with many small rituals by the medicine man.
