  • Jan Baptist Wolfert, attributed, Southern Landscape, after 1658

Jan Baptist Wolfert, attributed, Southern Landscape, after 1658

    Est: €4,000 - €5,000

Oil on canvas, relined Holland, after 1658 Attributed to Jan Baptist Wolfert (1625-1687) - Flemish-Dutch landscape and animal painter With a report from Professor Dr. Justus Müller Hofstede, Bonn, dated 23/10/1985 (available in copy) Dimensions: 53.3 x 43.3 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany Jan Baptist Wolfert was deeply inspired by his impressions of his travel to Italy; his compositions with peasants and herdsmen fetch up to €12,000 at international auctions The present landscape is attributed to the Flemish-Dutch painter Jan Baptist Wolfert. It depicts a southern region with a bridge and a river, leading from the distance to the foreground. The left hand side reveals a young shepherdess talking to he mounted partner. They are surrounded by their herd, heading for the water. The sky is bathed in the beautiful light of the sun. The painting was examined by Professor Dr. Justus Müller Hofstede in 1985; here, he refers to a similar composition of the artist, published in K. J. Müllermeister: 'Meer und Land im Licht des 17. Jahrhunderts. Tierdarstellungen in Werken niederländischer Künstler.', Vol. III, Bremen 1981, pic. 531 and text p. 99-100. The canvas of the painting is relined. Inspection under UV light reveals larger areas of retouching to the background. The work is however in good overall condition considering its age. The stretcher measures 53.3 x 43.3 cm and the framed dimensions are 71 x 60.5 cm. Jan Baptist Wolfert (1625-1687) Jan Baptist Wolfert (also known as J. B. Wolfordt or Wolfaerts) was born in Antwerp and grew up as the son of the historical painter Artus Wolfordt (1581-1641). In 1647, he temporarily worked in Haarlem. It is possible that the artist already spent some time in Italy before 1646; in 1658, he indeed was active in Rome, where he discovered and acquired great sources of motifs, just like many Dutch Italianized artists at that time. Examples of his artistic output can be found at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, at the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem as well as at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
