    1920. Oil/canvas. 74,5 x 65,5 cm. On the reversesign. G. Wohlwill. Tiny pigment losses. - Painter and graphic artist. W. studied at the Ladies painting school of Valeska Röver in Hamburg under E. Eitner and A. Illies as well as in Paris at the Académie Stettler; she was also assistant in the studio of H. Matisse. Back in Hamburg she was amoung the co-founders of the Hamburg secession, but had to emigrate to Portugal in 1940. She returned to Hamburg in 1952. Her impressionist style was much influenced by P. Cézanne a. H. Matisse during her Paris sojourn, later she turned to New Objectivity a. the Hamburg secession style. W. studied at the Ladies painting school of Valeska Röver in Hamburg under E. Eitner and A. Illies as well as in Paris at the Académie Stettler; she was also assistant in the studio of H. Matisse. Back in Hamburg she was amoung the co-founders of the Hamburg secession, but had to emigrate to Portugal in 1940. She returned to Hamburg in 1952. Her impressionist style was much influenced by P. Cézanne a. H. Matisse during her Paris sojourn, later she turned to New Objectivity a. the Hamburg secession style.     Zwei Schreiner bei der ArbeitÖl auf Leinwand. Wohl um 1950.74,5 x 89,5 cm. Unten rechts mit Pinsel in Grau signiert "G. Wohlwill", verso mit Pinsel in Schwarz bezeichnet "Neneres J. Umdrehen" sowie bezeichnet "No.2" und "6000#". Gretchen Wohlwill gilt heute als eine der bedeutendsten Schülerinnen von Henri Matisse, doch geriet ihr Werk nach ihrem Tode etwas in Vergessenheit. Ihre erste künstlerische Ausbildung erhielt sie in Hamburg unter Eitner und Illies, 1904-1905 an der eher konservativ ausgerichteten Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris unter Lucien Simon und Jacques-Émile Blanche. Sie kehrte 1909 für ein Jahr nach Paris zurück, um an der sogenannten Académie Matisse zu studieren, wo sie auch mit Friedrich Ahlers-Hestermann, Hans Purrmann und Franz Nölken zusammentraf. Die intensive Auseinandersetzung mit der französischen Avantgarde wirkte sich prägend auf ihr gesamtes künstlerisches Schaffen aus. Seit den 1920er Jahren konnte sie als Mitbegründerin der Hamburger Secession große künstlerische Erfolge feiern, jedoch wurde sie wegen ihrer jüdischen Abstammung von den Nationalsozialisten 1933 verfemt, aus dem Staatsdienst entlassen und malte zurückgezogen in ihrem Atelier in Finkenwerder. 1940 emigrierte sie schließlich für zwölf Jahre nach Portugal. Seit 1930 schuf Wohlwill bevorzugt expressionistisch geprägte Gemälde mit einer Betonung der Flächigkeit.
