    Est: €700 - €910

Gelatin silver print Zittau, Germany, 1987 Siegfried Wittenburg (b. 1952) – German photographer Signed with pencil on the verso ‘Wittenburg’; also inscribed and dated ‘Zittau 1987, Sept.; Abzug 1987’ as well as titled ‘Vollbeschäftigung’ Image size: 21 x 32 cm Very good condition Wittenburg is regarded as a chronicler of his time and produced numerous impressive pictures of life in the GDR Object is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU. Siegfried Wittenburg took the present snapshot in 1987, when visiting the small town Zittau close to Görlitz. The photographer’s interest has obviously been attracted by the sign ‘Mein Arbeitsplatz – mein Kampfplatz für den FRIEDEN‘, serving as a memorial of full employment. Not surprisingly that the wall of brick pallets almost blocks the view of the restaurant behind. The photograph is a typical example of the critical documentations Siegfried Wittenburg took during the 1980s in the GDR. The print is verso signed with pencil ‘Wittenburg’. It is also inscribed and dated ‘Zittau 1987, Sept.; Abzug 1987’ as well as titled ‘Vollbeschäftigung’. The photo is in very good condition and only shows a few tiny stains on the upper edge, but outside the picture. The image size is 21 x 32 cm and the size of the sheet is 29 x 39 cm. Siegfried Wittenburg (b. 1952) Siegfried Wittenburg is a self-trained photographer and has been active in the field since 1977. In the 1980s he already participated in exhibitions in the GDR (German Democratic Republic) and abroad. From 1982 onwards, he worked as the head of the youth photography club ‘Konkret’. Most of his photographs document the daily life in the north of the GDR and they were consistently subject to censorship. Only after 1989, he was able to practice his work safely and uncensored. Today, Siegfried Wittenburg lives and works in Rostock and works as a photo artist, designer and author. (cbo) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. Vintage silver gelatin print on Baryta paper Rostock, Germany, 1989, printed in 1990 Siegfried Wittenburg (b. 1952) – German photographer Verso dated, numbered, signed and inscribed Verso with black photographer's stamp Good condition Sheet size: 48.8 x 38.5 cm Provenance: Private collection Hamburg, Germany Snapshot of the peaceful revolution in 1989; a typical work by Wittenburg, who has extensively documented the German reunification process Object is regular taxed. Differential taxation is not possible. This photo by Siegfried Wittenburg was taken in 1989 and shows a group of people gathered in the rain in front of the Marienkirche in Rostock. In the foreground a woman is holding a lit candle in her hand. In 1989 the church was a meeting place for opposition forces, who gathered here for prayers of peace and ceremonies under the leadership of pastor Joachim Gauck. In the 1980s Wittenburg documented life in the GDR, mainly in the region of the Baltic Sea. In many of his works, which were often censored by the government, he captured – as seen here – the revolutionary movement in Rostock. The photograph is in good condition with minor handling creases and edge wear. The upper right corner shows a visible dog ear. In the center there is a crease mark in the left area, which is only visible in raking light. On the verso the sheet is dated ‘Rostock 11. Januar 1990’ numbered ‘3/2/3’, signed ‘Wittenburg’ and inscribed ‘Menschengruppe mit Kerze von der Marienkirche’ (Group of people with candle in front of St. Mary's Church) in pencil. Furthermore there is a black photographer's stamp. The sheet size is 48.8 x 38.5 cm. Siegfried Wittenburg (b. 1952) Self-educated, Siegfried Wittenburg dedicated himself to photography from 1977 onwards.
