  • Jerome Witkin "Figure in Landscape" Large Painting
    Mar. 20, 2024

Jerome Witkin "Figure in Landscape" Large Painting

    Est: $2,000 - $4,000

Jerome Witkin (American, b. 1939). Large oil on canvas painting titled "Figure in Landscape" depicting an unhoused person crouched next to a wall behind a building, 1991. Signed and dated along the lower center; further signed, dated, and titled along the verso. Provenance: Distinguished Corporate Collection, Minnesota. Lot Essay: Jerome Witkin has been described as one of America's foremost figurative painters. His works often deal with political, social, and cultural themes as well as portraiture. He has been described as "a virtuoso figurative painter whose work mixed elements of the old masters, social realism, and Abstract Expressionism." His works often are categorized by three explorations: first, the creation of a realistic pictorial form influenced by Abstract Expressionism; second, implications surrounding the death of his father and themes of mortality in underlying personal and social relationships; third, "realist" denunciations of human rights issues. His works are included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Hirshhorn Museum.

  • JEROME PAUL WITKIN (American 1939- ) Oil Painting
    Apr. 07, 2013

JEROME PAUL WITKIN (American 1939- ) Oil Painting

    Est: $600 - $900

JEROME PAUL WITKIN (American, 1939- ) "Small Self Portrait". Oil on linen. Signed lower left Witkin; reverse Witkin 1978. Good condition, measures 21" x 22 ¼". From AskArt: "A painter who conveys moral messages in his artwork, Jerome Witkin has "resuscitated narrative painting after the heyday of abstraction." He believes that moral values are as important as formal or aesthetic values ones and "has chosen to make work that deals with human drama." Because his paintings, done exclusively in oil, tend to be laden with narrative figures and symbolic images, he often does diptych, triptychs and polyptychs in cinematic sequences, "to be read from left to right as they unfold in time." Witkin also does paintings that have only personal meaning such as troubled family relationships and observed violence. Witkin was born in Brooklyn, and his formal art education began when he was age 16 and received a scholarship to the Skowhegan School of Painting. Among his teachers there were Isabel Bishop, George Grosz, Jack Levine and Ben Shahn. Each of these teachers wove their social convictions into their artwork, which made a permanent impression on Witkin. In the late 1950s, he studied at Cooper Union in New York, and was much influenced by Abstract Expressionism. Although he did not adopt the style, he did adopt the intensity of commitment to process of its exponents. Winning a Pulitzer Traveling Scholarship, he went to Europe in 1960, and studied Renaissance painting in Florence, Italy; visited philosophical painter, Giorgo Morandi (1890-1964) in Bologna; and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976), an architectural painter in Berlin and one of the creators of "Die Brucke", a 'bridging' between the prevalent Romantic style of German painting with the growing movement of Expressionism. However, the person having the greatest influence on Witkin during this trip was Kathe Kollwitz "through her unflinching attention to human grief." In 1976, painting an homage to Kollwitz, Witkin did a large picture of a viewer looking onto a street through a shattered glass window from a store in ruins that had specialized in prosthetic devices. Titled Kill-Joy: To the Passions of Kathe Kollwitz, it referenced the deaths of a son and grandson of Kollwitz in World Wars I and II. Jerome Witkin also has been an art educator, and teaching assignments include the Maryland Institute of Art, Manchester College of Art in England, Moore College and from 1971, Syracuse University where he served as Associate Professor of Art."
