Frederik de Wit (1629-1706) Map of Africa Engraved and Hand Colored Circa 1680 "Totius Africae Accuratissima Tabula"

    Est: $100 - $200

Frederik de Wit (1629-1706) Map of Africa Engraved and Hand Colored Circa 1680 "Totius Africae Accuratissima Tabula".   "Frederik de Wit (1629 - 1706) was a Dutch Golden Age cartographer active in the second half of the 17th and the early 18th centuries.  De Wit was born of middle class Protestant stock in the western Netherlandish town of Gouda.  He relocated to Amsterdam sometime before 1648, where he worked under Willem Blaeu.  His first attributed engraved map, a plan of Haarlem for Antonius Sanderus' Flandria Illustrata, was issued around this time.  He struck out on his own in 1654. The first chart that De Wit personally both drew and engraved was most likely his 1659 map of Denmark, REGNI DANIÆ Accuratissima delineatio Perfeckte Kaerte van ‘t CONJNCKRYCK DENEMARCKEN.  His great wall map of the world and most famous work, Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula appeared one year later.  Following the publication of his wall map De Wit quickly rose in prominence as a both cartographer and engraver.  He married Maria van der Way in 1661 and through her became a citizen of Amsterdam in 1662.  Around this time he also published his first major atlas, a composite production ranging in size from 17 to over 150 maps and charts. Other atlases and individual maps followed.  In 1689 De Wit was granted a 15 year Privilege by the Dutch States General. (An early copyright that protected the recipient's rights to print and publish.) He was recognized with the honorific 'Good Citizen' in 1694.  De Wit died in 1706 after which his wife Maria continued publishing his maps until about 1710.  De Wit's son, Franciscus, had no interest in the map trade, instead choosing to prosper as a stockfish merchant. On her own retirement, Maria sold most De Wit maps and plates at a public auction.  Most were acquired by Pieter Mortier and laid the groundwork for the 1721 rise of Covens and Mortier, the largest Dutch cartographic publishing house of the 18th century." - Geographicus Rare Antique Maps   Overall Size: 22 x 25 in. • De Wit - Map of the World

De Wit - Map of the World

    Est: $6,000 - $10,000

This remarkable folio engraving from a composite atlas of maps from Frederik De Wit. It was published in Amsterdam after 1688. It features original hand-coloring. De Wit published composite atlases using plate stock of his own and other Amsterdam map publishers. This included maps from the likes of Hondius, Bleau, and Visscher. "The De Wit composite or 'dual-purpose' atlas is an early example of an atlas planned at its outset to serve as a land and a sea atlas in one. Koeman lists these works according to the number of maps and by and large this progression gives a fair idea of their development and therefore dates, beginning in the early 1660s. But he acknowledges it is not accurate and often subject to revised opinion. The index is quite unlike any of those listed in Koeman." (Wardington Catalogue) Frederik De Wit (1629-1706) created a leading publishing firm in Amsterdam during the golden age of Dutch cartography. He was a catographer and mapseller that was best known for his atlases and his Dutch town maps. After De Wit's passing his wife, Maria, ran the shop for a few years before selling. At this point, most of his plates went to Pieter Mortier.

DE WIT, Frederick (1629-1706). (107) Illustrillimo Celsissimoque Principi Carolo Emanueli D. G. Sabaudiae Duci Pedemontii Principi etc. Hanc Accurastam Status Sabaudici Tabulam in Ducatum Sabaudiae, Principatum Pedemontii, Comitatum Nicaeensem et caeteras Partes Minores exacte divisam. Engraved map with original hand color, heightened in gold. Color by Dirk Jansz Van Santen, master colorist. Amsterdam: De Wit, c. 1680. 24 3/4" x 21 1/8" sheet. In the seventeenth century, the Netherlands held a prominent position in Europe in the production of books, maps and prints. Not only were the number, diversity and quality of printed works renown, but also the ""versiering"" - the application of decorative graphic elements in the coloring of maps, prints, title pages, opening and closing vignettes, etc. Little is known about the many print and map colorists, the 'const- en caertafzetters', who lived in the Netherlands at the time. Three colorists are seen as the most important artists of that time: Frans Koerten, David Reerigh, and Dirk Jansz. van Santen. Since the work of a colorist was usually not signed, many have remained anonymous. However, the most important exception to this rule was Dirk Jansz van Santen. Van Santen illuminated and gilded the most prestigious printed works of his time in an exceptionally painterly and brilliant manner. In doing so he made the Golden Age of Dutch Cartographer, quite literally golden. (Truusje Goedings: Amsterdam, 1992)."

Amsterdam, c. 1680. This finely engraved chart of the Pacific was first published in De Wit's Orbis Maritimus ofte Zee Atlas in 1675. The chart shows a post Tasman East Indies. The chart includes the Dutch discoveries made up to Abel Tasman's second voyage of 1644, including the outlines of 'Anthoni van Diemens Landt' (Tasmania) and the partial outlines of New Zealand, discovered in 1642-3. Further north are the discoveries made in 1606 by Willem Janszoon aboard the Duyfkin, including the shorelines of the Gulf of Carpentaria and New Guinea. California is shown as an island and the portrayal of Japan is quite curious. Decorated with 4 sailing ships, a compass rose, rhumb lines and a striking cartouche, surmounted by Magellan's portrait, this is one of the best Pacific Ocean Maps of the period.

This beautifully engraved chart was based Van Loon's important chart of 1666 and includes Hudson Bay and Strait, Baffins Bay and extends to include the western coast of Greenland. A sea battle rages outside of the Hudson Straits and another ship sails in Baffins Bay. The chart is richly embellished with rhumb lines and two elaborate cartouches; the second with the Dutch title.

DE WIT'S ORBIS MARITIMUS OFTE ZEE, WARDINGTON COPY

    Est: $60,000 - $80,000

DE WIT, Frederick (1630-1706). Orbis Maritimus ofte Zee. Amsterdam: F. de Wit, 1690. Comparables: Sotheby's, 2006 - 176,000 GBP; Reiss and Sohn, 2004 - 32,200 Euro. Folio (21" x 12 1/2"). Engraved allegorical title-page showing the globe surmounted by the figure of Atlas with printed index listing 27 subjects on verso, 27 double-page engraved charts, and 1 fold-out map, all with FINE CONTEMPORARY HAND COLOR (occasional light offsetting). 19th-century calf antique with blind floral tooled borders (re-backed, repair on front hinge). Provenance: engraved armorial bookplate of Baron de Launoit on the front free endpaper; Christopher Henry Beaumont Pease, Lord Wardington (1924-2005), Library of Important Atlases and Geographies, Sotheby's 10th October 2006, lot 541: GBP 24,000. A late issue of this remarkable sea atlas. A dramatic image of Atlas pressed against the ceiling of a star filled sky, perched at the top of a globe depicting Europe, Asia, and Africa (with the western edge of Australia unidentified in the lower right) opens this incredible atlas. All maps very clear with coloring still bright and vibrant, particularly the large fold-out map of Europe and North Africa. Pages turn as if they were bound yesterday with maps that lay flat, making this a wonderful presentation copy. More than a collection of detailed maps of every known corner of the Earth, his work serves as a world tour in the form of the fanciful and imaginative cartouches and map embellishments that illustrate this impressive atlas. A wonderful polar projection is enrobed in scenes of whalers killing and processing what look like giant trout, and a particularly jarring scene accompanying the map of Russia depicts a bear hunt in the wild. While most of the map details draw on the work of earlier cartographers, for this edition de Wit draws on his substantial skills as a realiser of scenes from the vast Unknown to tickle the imaginations of readers safe at home. Truly the Hieronymus Bosch of Atlas illustration. "It's an amazingly attractive sea atlas and, unlike Goos, Doncker, Robijn, Van Keulen etc., it seems to have been continuously revised and updated. I have since added a copy of the last (third) state of de Wit's chart of the Channel which shows the coastline of France and the Channel Islands re-engraved" (Lord Wardington). Koeman IV, Wit I; Phillips 485.
