Tapio Wirkkala DOPPIO INCALMO Bottle Form Vase, 17.75"H, Murano

Artist/Designer; Manufacturer: Tapio Wirkkala (Finnish, 1915-1985); Venini (Italy) Marking(s); notes: signed, label; 1985 Materials: glass Dimensions (H, W, D): 17.75"h, 4.5"dia Additional Information: Vase is from the Bolle series. Reference (similar example): Venini Glass Catalogue 1921-2007, Franco Deboni, plate 279. Provenance: Private Collection, Ithaca, New York. About the collection: The late collector's wife recalls their first glass purchase in a London antique shop circa 1985, which ignited a 30+ year passion for the genre. The couple and their daughter acquired pieces individually during their travels around Western Europe, Toronto, and New York, and ultimately amassed around 300 vessels and sculptures by artists including Fulvio Bianconi, Toots Zynsky, Carlo Scarpa, Ercole Barovier, Paolo Venini, Vittorio Ferro and others. "My husband became a student of the art he collected," recalls Mrs. N. and their daughter. "With each new artist he admired, he would buy books about them, and the biographies and catalogs became catalysts for acquiring more pieces. He was always looking for variety, and he would seek out individual pieces to round out a segment of the collection. When something caught his eye, he pounced on it, and if he couldn't have that particular piece, he'd search for one like it."

    Est: €600 - €700

TAPIO WIRKKALA (Hanko, Finland, 1915-Helsinki, 1985) for Littala Glassworks. Center "Lunaria", 1972. Glass. Signed: "Tapio Wirkkala, 3449". Measurements: 40 cm (diameter). Centerpiece model "Lunaria", made of cut glass with rich translucent textures. Designed by Tapio Wirkkala in 1972, this beautiful piece is inspired by the craters of the moon. Tapio Wirkkala was a multi-talented design genius, widely considered a leading figure in modern Finnish industrial art. A multi-faceted artist, his art ranged from glass, furniture and product design to sculpture and urban planning. Wirkkala exhibited all over the world, but was a recluse by nature. His favorite place was a spot so remote in the deep forests of central Finland that helicopters delivered prototypes to his cabin, as no automobile could reach him. It was in nature that he found his much-loved solitude and inspiration for the forms that industry could produce or works of art could create. That same year the director of the Venini glassworks offered him a collaboration with his company. Present on numerous occasions in Murano between late 1965 and 1970 and again in the early 1980s, Wirkkala progressively gained confidence in both the filigree technique and the "discovery" of color. He excelled in the use of the incalmo technique to create polychrome objects in transparent glass that achieved remarkable commercial success. Throughout his incredibly productive career, Wirkkala received numerous awards, including three gold medals at the Milan Triennale, the Lunning Prize, the Pro Finlandia Medal and the Prince Eugen Medal. Awards and distinctions: 1st and 2nd place, Bank of Finland Banknote Design Competition 1947, 4 awards, Olympic Stamp Design 1951, for the 1952 Summer Olympic Games, 3 Grand Prizes at the 9th Milan Triennale, 1951, 3 Grand Prizes, at the 10th Milan Triennale, 1954, Lunning Prize 1951, Order of the Lion of Finland - medal 1955, 1st place, Brussels Universal Exhibition 1957, Medal of the year 1958 of the Society of Industrial Arts, Grand Prize and Gold Medal, Milan 1960, Silver Medal, Milan 1963.Domus Golden Obelisk. Milan 1963, Gold Medal of the President of Italy, International Ceramics Competition of Faenza 1963, 1966, 1967, 1969 and 1973, International Prize of Vicenza 1963, 1966 and 1967, Honorary Royal Designer of Industry. London 1964, Honorary Award of the Finnish Cultural Foundation 1968, Honorary Doctorate, Royal College of Arts, London 1971, Honorary Fellow of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, London 1971, Honorary title of Academician of the Academy of Finland in 1972, Medal of the Teosto organization for Creative Work 1980, Prince Eugen Medal. Stockholm 1980. Tapio Wirkkala landed in Murano in 1965.

TAPIO WIRKKALA (Hanko, Finland, 1915-Helsinki, 1985) for VENINI. Pair of "Korean" centers, 1984 and 1992. Design 1966. Murano glass. Signed and dated by the artist and with Venini labels. Measurements: 13,5 x 29,5 cm (diameter); 13 x 20 cm (diameter). Pair of centerpieces from the "Korean" series made in clear glass with two wide spiral bands fused in sky blue and apple green. Designed by the famous Tapio Wirkkala in 1966, this extraordinary series materialized thanks to the artisans of the Venini glassworks on the famous island of Murano in Venice in 1985. Tapio Wirkkala was a multi-talented design genius, widely considered a leading figure of modern Finnish industrial art. Published in “Wirkkala Wall at Venini”, Skira publishing house, p. 148. Signed and dated on the base. Dimensions: 20 x 20 cm. The popular “Bolle” series, which in Spanish translates as “Bubbles,” is one of the most famous and important series by acclaimed designer Tapio Wirkkala. It is made up of vases with evocative shapes: three with a flattened globular body and one with an oval body (no. 502) and a second group of three bottle-shaped vases, with pronounced and rounded shoulders and larger than the first (no. 503). . They are vases made of fine transparent glass in two colors joined using the incalmo technique, with the exception of No. 503.0 which has three colors. The series ran from 1966 to 1967 and was first illustrated at Venini Glassworks. Very sophisticated colors and combinations were used that included both delicate shades such as stump and amethyst or stump and aquamarine. Also bright shades such as green and tea yellow or red and pagliesque. In the mid-1970s the number of models was reduced to five, excluding no. 502.0 and n. 502.3 of the catalog. Model 503.2 of the Bolle series ('Bubbles') transforms air into matter in two different chromatic zones physically united with the incalm technique: the fusion of two blown shapes.
