    Est: £200 - £300

Circle of Hermann Winterhalter,  German 1808-1891-  Portrait of a lady, bust-length, with a black ribbon adorned with gold in her hair;  oil on board, oval, bears label for 'C. DAVY / COLOURMAN TO ARTISTS / 83 NEWMAN STREET, LONDON' verso, 24.7 x 20 cm.  Provenance:  The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson.  Note:  Winterhalter's portraits frequently evoke a sense of dreaminess which is, nevertheless, slightly more restrained and somewhat less fanciful than those of his brother, the portrait painter Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805-1873). The sitter's stance in the present work, with a slightly turned head and slightly exposed shoulder, are also typical of Hermann Winterhalter's compositions, imparting the work with a hint of sensuality.

    HERMANN WINTERHALTER

    Est: CHF10,000 - CHF15,000

HERMANN WINTERHALTER (Menzenschwand 1808–1891 Karlsruhe) Portrait of Fräulein Moser. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right: H Winterhalter. 73 × 59.3 cm (oval). Provenance: Private collection, Switzerland. ------------------------------------------------- HERMANN WINTERHALTER (Menzenschwand 1808–1891 Karlsruhe) Porträt des Fräulein Moser. Öl auf Leinwand. Unten rechts signiert: H Winterhalter. 73 × 59,3 cm (oval). Provenienz: Schweizer Privatbesitz.

AMENDMENT. PLEASE NOTE THE UPDATED ATTRIBUTION AND ESTIMATES FOR THIS LOT.  Circle of Hermann Winterhalter,  German 1808-1891-  Portrait of a girl, bust-length, wearing a white lace top and pink shawl;  oil on canvas, oval, 62.7 x 50.5 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The present work bears similarities to the studies of girls by Hermann Winterhalter which are held at the UK's Royal Collection (see for examples nos RCIN 406400, RCIN 404782, RCIN 403685 and RCIN 404538). The anonymous hand behind this romantic portrait was undoubtedly professionally trained and highly skilled. The portrait most likely dates to the 1860s, judging from the girl's hairstyle, pink shawl, and elaborately lace-trimmed dress.

Signed and dated lower right: H. Winterhalter 11 avril 42 and 22 mars 42 Framed Hermann Winterhalter was the younger brother of the famous portrait painter Franz Xaver Winterhalter. Like him, Hermann studied painting, travelling to Munich and Rome for further training. In 1840 he settled in Paris, where Franz Xaver also worked. The brothers had a very good relationship to one another and after the fall of the Second Empire both decided to retire to Karlsruhe. Hermann outlived his older brother by almost 20 years.
