    Josef Winterhalder worked from around 1763 to 1768 in the workshop of Anton Maulbertsch (1724–1796) and can be considered his best student. The Throne of Mercy can be attributed to him for stylistic reasons. The painting shows the Trinity, God the Father, the sacrificed Jesus Christ and St. Spirit in an expressive interpretation of the subject of mercy seat. Greatest intensity is placed in the face of Christ. He holds up his hands to show his stigmata. The painter cleverly combines cool tones in the flesh of Jesus with the warm, red-brown tonality of the overall scene. The motif of the legs placed on top of each other in the figure of Christ also appears almost identically on Maulbertsch's monumental altarpiece from 1766 in the Cistercian monastery church Porta Coeli near Tišnov (north of Brno). The Throne of Mercy probably also originated at this time, around 1766.
