  • R. WINTER (1784-1852), Inn in Assisi, 1829, Pencil
    Dec. 07, 2024

    R. WINTER (1784-1852), Inn in Assisi, 1829, Pencil

    Est: €900 - €1,200

Raphael Winter (1784 Munich - 1852 ibid.): Inn in Assisi, 1829, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper Inscription: Lower right signed: "R. Winter". Lower right inscribed: "Wirtshaus Assisi den 6 Juni 1829.". Date: 1829 Description: Raphael Winter was the son of the well-known Munich animal and hunting painter and etcher Joseph Georg Winter (1751-1789). He received his first art lessons from his father. His style and the instruction he received from his stepfather Johann Michael Mettenleiter had a lasting influence on his son's work. In 1809 Winter joined the lithographic institute of the royal council of state in Munich, which he directed until his death. Later, together with the Dall'Armi brothers, he founded a lithographic printing house in Rome.   Raphael Winter visited Italy twice, in 1803 and in the late 1820s, probably to study the landscape. The 1829 drawing of an inn in Assisi, however, shows that he apparently took every opportunity to study his favourite subject: Animals. Behind the wall on the left side of the composition, a hedge represents the beauty of the landscape. It is rendered barely perceptibly with a few quick strokes. The artist deals similarly with the inn building, whose essential features, such as the windows, the entrance and the sloping roof, are merely captured with hectic pencil movements. In contrast, he devotes all his drawing skill to the group with a horse and three mules. They are sketched in full detail, both their anatomical features and their equipment such as saddle and bridle.  Despite the compositional emphasis on the animals, Winter succeeds in creating the image of a hot Italian day before the viewer's eyes. The sun is high, the resting draft animals are about to continue their arduous journey through the Italian countryside. Keywords: Animals, Italy, Inn, Horses, Travel sketch, 19th century, Romanticism, Architecture, Italy, Size: Paper: 17,1 cm x 22,0 cm (6,7 x 8,7 in)

    R. WINTER (1784-1852), The flight of the horses, 1810, Pen drawing

    Est: €600 - €800

Raphael Winter (1784 Munich - 1852 ibid.): The flight of the horses Horses fleeing from a pack of wolves, 1810, Pen drawing Technique: Watercolored Pen drawingPen drawing on Paper Inscription: Lower right monogrammed: "R W inv". Lower right dated: "den 20 Nov 1810". Date: 1810 Description: Raphael Winter received his first training from his stepfather Johann Michael Mettenleiter. In 1790, the latter had been appointed electoral hunting and court copperplate engraver and thus continued the office and business of Winter's father. Raphael himself was appointed the first lithographer at the royal state council's lithographic institute in 1809. In 1818 he travelled to Rome to set up a lithographic printing shop for Johann von Dall'Armi. He returned to Italy in 1830. Like his father Joseph Georg Winter, who died in 1789, Raphael devoted himself mainly to the depiction of animals, both in drawing and watercolour, as well as in printmaking. His lithographed animal sheets are among the pioneering works in this medium. The theme of the present sheet can be found again and again in the oeuvre of both father and son, even if the wolves' hunt is often centred on deer. Here they are chasing a group of three horses. One wolf has already caught the remaining horse by the throat, while another wolf is beaten back by the horse with its hooves. Raphael Winter depicts the drama of the scene in cool and sober colours, creating a contrast to the actual events. In the second half of the 19th century, this depiction became popular again, particularly through Polish painters such as Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski. Keywords: Hunting, horses, wolves, escape, 19th century, Romanticism, Animals, Germany, Size: Paper: 12,2 cm x 19,2 cm (4,8 x 7,6 in), Frame: 34,9 cm x 44,4 cm (13,7 x 17,5 in)
