Alice Winant (Romanian, 1928-1989) - Mother and Children, Bronze Sculpture. Signed. Height: 54cm. Romanian-born Alice Winant was imprisoned at Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz in the final stages of the Second World War. It was during her two years of recovery at a hospital in Sweden that she first pursued sculpture under the guidance of artist Carl Helbig. She went on to study at the Ecole des beaux-arts de Paris before moving to Montreal in 1954. Winants work from the sixties consists primarily of human figures, particularly mothers and children; inspired by the work of Giacometti, her bronze sculptures reveal a careful attention to texture. In the early seventies, she participated in exhibitions at the Association des Sculpteurs du Quebec and began producing colourful, dance-inspired sculptures in polished bronze. She was invited to Paris to work in the studios of the Musee Rodin in 1971, and in subsequent years, presented her artwork in Canada, the United States, Europe and Israel. Her pieces now belong to major private and museum collections and include First Jewel (of which two versions exist), a statue that remains at the Montreal Botanical Garden. In 1972, Winant made the following statement in the press: It is possible that sculpture has become the symbolic discipline of survival, a way of creating forms and imparting order to inert materials. Dimensions 27.25" H x 14" W x 6" D | About the Artist: Alice Winant (1928 - 1989) - A well-known Canadian sculptor, Alice Winant (nee Czitron) was born in Targu Mures, Romania. Near the end of World War II (1944 - 1945), she was imprisoned in Dachau, Germany; Bergen-Belsen, Germany; and Auschwitz, Poland. After the war she lived in Stockholm, Sweden for seven years (1946 - 1953). She immigrated to Montreal, Quebec in 1953, where she lived the rest of her life and died. Her mediums were bronze, ceramics, wax, wood, plaster, and photography. Her best known subjects were portraits and figures of women and children; she also did abstract works. Her styles could be described as Realism*, Fauvism*, Naïve Art*, Abstraction* and Modernism*. AskART images have some excellent illustrations of her oeuvre. Her art education includes photography school in Romania. In Sweden she began sculpting in ceramics and continued working in that medium for several years in Canada, until switching to bronze. Her only noted studies as a sculptor are six months working at the Rodin Museum, Paris in 1971. Winant's works were given a solo exhibition at the Dominion Gallery*, Montreal in 1970.According to the Canadian Heritage Information Network* and individual museum websites, her works are in the permanent collections of the Art Gallery of Alberta (Edmonton), Art Gallery of Hamilton (Ontario), Joliette Art Museum (Quebec), Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (Quebec), and the Storm King Art Center (Mountainville, New York).
