CHARLES BANKS WILSON (1918-2013) BENTON FARM WATERCOLOR

    Est: $3,000 - $4,000

Charles Banks Wilson (Oklahoma, 1918-2013) The Benton Farm Circa 1970 The watercolor on paper picturing Benton's oft-depicted barn is signed lower right. Thomas Hart Benton bought his daughter a farm in rural Kansas. In the catalog on his prints by Creekmore Fath, Benton explained, ' she belongs to one of those youth groups, or communes, which have sprung up over the United States in late years.A number of those in her group wanted to try farming and found a good farm for sale out in mid Kansas. We bought this, two hundred and eighty one acres, and let them have a crack at running it. They are doing extraordinarily well.' Apparently the farm's lone worthwhile landmark was this barn which Benton portrayed in a 1972 lithograph and a 1973 painting, the latter being on view now at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. Wilson chose to paint the barn and barnyard as well, with some modifications. An inscription verso on the frame liner reads 'This was identified by Marianne Berardi and Henry Adams as The Benton Farm. It was in show at Albrecht Kemper in 2004.' Sight size measures 13.5 x 21 with a framed size of 22.25 x 29.75 inches. That said, this still marks only the second appearance on record of this rare image having appeared at auction in any size or edition, according to all four major art auction record databases and entries on the major online bidding platforms. Charles Banks Wilson's comments about the image are, 'The drummers are singing a special song for the winner of the War Dance contest. Contests are held at nearly every powwow I attend, with prize money and trophies offered to induce the better dancers to be there. I find the dances are not so much a ceremony these days as they are an art form.' Charles Banks Wilson personally bore witness to the events he portrayed in art. Add to this the rarity of this low edition print and it confirms that this image is both rare and desirable. CHARLES BANKS WILSON (1918-2013) RARE 1941 LITHOGRAPH

    Est: $1,000 - $2,000

Charles Banks Wilson (Oklahoma, 1918-2013) Handgame Feast aka Mealtime at a Handgame 1941 The fine, early lithograph from an edition of only 30 prints is signed and dated by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower left, Hunt number 11. As per usual with all early Charles Wilson lithographs, this is a fine, dark impression. Exhibited: 1st Southwestern Print Exhibition, February 1-29, 1948, Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. This composition documents a traditional Native American social gathering centered around a guessing game known as Handgame where one team hides engraved bone domino-like game pieces in their hands and the opposing team attempts to guess who holds which piece. The artist's comments in The Lithographs of Charles Banks Wilson by David Hunt read: Uncle Alex Beaver's longhouse was the setting, and the handgame the central activity of an evening that included all manner of country games. Afterward, the food that everyone had brought for the occasion was carried in from the cooking fires outside. What wasn't eaten was divided up and taken home -- a satisfying climax to an evening of fun, not ceremony. No record of this print having been offered at auction can be found. One other from the edition is held in the Gilcrease museum. Image measures 9 x 15 with a framed size of 18 x 23.5 inches.
