    Mar. 31, 2019

    Alexander Wilson (1766-1813) Engraving

    Est: $400 - $800

Born in Scotland, Alexander Wilson is regarded as the father of American ornithology. He first worked in Scotland as a weaver and peddler and came to the United States in 1794, reportedly to forget several love affairs. He taught school in Pennsylvania and New Jersey for about 10 years and began working on American bird studies after meeting William Bartram in 1802. Wilson learned to draw from Alexander Lawson, an engraver, and quickly became proficient at depicting birds, then Lawson made the pictures into engravings. Lawson's major work, American Ornithology, showed two plates etched by Wilson, but apparently the etchings were not a major success for Wilson, unlike his drawings. In 1804, Wilson did a sketch of Niagara Falls, engraved for a folio in 1810. That same year, he visited a general store in Louisville, Kentucky, run by John James Audubon. He showed Audubon his etchings in Lawson's volumes of American Ornithology, which inspired Audubon to design a more expansive project that culminated in his comprehensive Birds of America. Wilson died in Philadelphia in 1813. This colored engraving is a beautiful example of Wilson's work. It depicts four Southern birds: a Virginian Rail, a Clapper, a blue crane, and a little egret. There's a small three-masted ship on the horizon, and a large note on the backside which describes the book the engraving came from (American Ornithology: The Natural History of the Birds of the United States ... Plates ... Alexander Wilson ...). At the bottom of the engraving on the left side it reads, "Drawn from Nature by A Wilson" and on the right side it reads, "Engraved by J G Warnicke". The engraving is framed and matted, and there's a light water stain on the right margin. Overall size is 21 x 17 1/4 in. and the sight size is 13 1/2 x 10 1/4 in. Alexander Wilson (1766-1813) Engraving of Birds

    Est: $400 - $800

Alexander Wilson (1766-1813) Engraving of Birds. WILSON, Alexander (1766-1813) – A selection of watercolors copied from “American Ornithology” by Thomas Howitt. [England,] 1827. An album of annotated watercolors after Wilson’s American Ornithology. This handsome manuscript was created by Thomas Howitt, an amateur ornithologist possibly related to the painter Samuel Howitt. The delicate watercolors reproduce portions of Wilson’s original plates, with notes copied from the text. The Coe Ornithological Collection at Yale holds a similar manuscript by Howitt, described in the Yale University Library Gazette as “of fundamental importance in the history of American ornithology.” An unidentifed manuscript at the McGill library on bird eggs may be by the same creator. Howitt is cited in William Yarrell’s 1843 A History of British Birds as a source of information about the Little Sandpiper. See S. Dillon Ripley, “The Coe Ornithological Collection,” The Yale University Library Gazette, October 1952, p. 68. Oblong quarto album (232 x 363mm). 70 watercolor drawings, each with manuscript caption and page of description (occasional faint ofsetting). Modern maroon half morocco; custom box.
