Hugh Harbison's Pair of U.S. Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolvers

    Est: $40,000 - $60,000

Historic Documented Pair of Presentation U.S. Colt Model 1851 Navy Percussion Revolvers Formerly Owned by Hugh Harbison, Bookkeeper, Secretary, and Treasurer of Colt's Pt. F.A. Mfg. Co with R.L. Wilson Authentication Letter. -A) Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver Historic Documented Pair of Presentation U.S. Colt Model 1851 Navy Percussion Revolvers Formerly Owned by Hugh Harbison, Bookkeeper, Secretary, and Treasurer of Colt's Pt. F.A. Mfg. Co with R.L. Wilson Authentication Letter. -A) Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver This unusual pair of deluxe finished U.S. contract Colt Model 1851 Navy revolvers dates to 1856 and are documented as owned by Hugh Harbison, an employee of Samuel Colt's company for 35 plus years rising from the position of bookkeeper in 1856 to secretary and treasurer of Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company in the 1860s into the late 19th century. These revolvers remained with Harbison's family until 1988. The revolvers are serial numbers 50836 and 50840 and thus are fairly close to a consecutive pair. They have the standard markings and features of the antebellum era U.S. contract Model 1851 Navy revolvers, including "U.S." marked under the "COLTS/PATENT" markings on the frames and government inspection markings, including "LCA" (Lucian C. Allin) and "RHKW" (Captain Robert Henry Kirkland Whiteley) cartouches. However, they are finished in higher gloss blue finish on the barrels and cylinders, vibrant niter bluing on the triggers and screws, bright case colors on the frames as well as the hammers and loading levers, and nickel plating on the grip frames. "K" is stamped on the left side of the barrels, cylinders, grip frame, and grips as well as the butt of each grip. They both have all matching visible serial numbers. For many years, the pair was held in a double rosewood factory case which is now absent. They are accompanied by a book style case reading "THE CASED COLT NAVY REVOLVERS/OF/HUGH HARBISON/SECRETARY/COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO./SERIAL NO. 50836 & 50840/U. S. MARKED" on the cover and "THE/HUGH HARBISON/CASED/COLT NAVIES" on the spine. Given the revolvers feature bright nickel plating on the grip frames, they were likely refinished by the factory in their special finishes around the 1870s, perhaps at Harbison's direction for himself or by the factory as presentation pieces for him, perhaps upon his retirement. Per his obituary in the Hartford Courant on March 11, 1903, the day following his death, Hugh Harbison was born in Aghory, Tandragee, County Armagh, Ireland, on October 26, 1833, and came to Hartford on August 26, 1849. Harbison found work initially at Denison, Morgan & Co. and then worked for Tracy & Fales as a bookkeeper. In 1856, he was hired by Samuel Colt as a bookkeeper. "He was made secretary and treasurer of Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company after the death of L.P. Sergeant and was practically the manager of the works until about twelve years ago, when he resigned, soon after the late John H. Hall came into the control of the management of the company. For many years he was the manager of Mrs. Colt's real and personal estate." He also was the senior member of grocery business Harbison Brothers with his younger brother Alexander and was also involved in other Hartford businesses as well as various civic organizations. His death was noted as originating from a fall through a skylight at his home that resulted in breaking three ribs three years prior to his death as well as a subsequent fall resulting in a broken leg. His obituary was printed side by side with General William Buel Franklin's but notable comes first and is notably longer. Franklin was a Civil War general and became Colt's vice president following the war until 1888. In an included research letter about the set, R.L. Wilson also notes that Harbison was a secretary and treasurer of the Union Ferry Company in 1859-1878. Samuel Colt and Elisha K. Root were directors of the company. He was a treasurer of Colt in 1862-1889 and secretary from 1867 to 1891. He is buried in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford. Wilson states: "The special finishes are the likely result of Hugh Harbison wishing to have specimens of manufacture by the Colt company, dating from the period of his first employment at Colt's. The date of these Navy Colts, based on their serial number range, coincides precisely with Harbison's initial employment at the factory - 1856. The cased set therefore may be considered symbols of some 35 years employment with the company, a period in which the emigrant bookkeeper rose to positions of power and prestige at the world's most famous and distinguished handgun makers." Wilson further indicates that he first saw this set in 1961 in Hartford while researching "Samuel Colt Presents" and that they remained in the Harbison family until late 1988. "Rarely encountered are firearms with pedigrees of 19th century Colt executives. Although Colonel Colt's own collection is in the Wadsworth Athenaeum, there are no firearms which were specifically built for his own use and ownership (exceptions being developmental prototypes and experimentals). The few E.K. Root guns are presentations, from Colonel Colt. No gun is known to the writer of L.P. Sargeant, Hugh Harbison's predecessor as Secretary and Treasurer of Colt's, nor of General William B. Franklin. One personal Colt of R.W.H. Jarvis is known...Scarce few pieces of other executives, even of Colt's 20th century history (up through c. 1960) are known....his positions as 'practically the manager of the works' and as 'the manager of Mrs. Colt's real and personal estate' all delineate Hugh Harbison as one of the most important figures in the history of the Colt Company. Hugh Harbison's personal cased set of Colt 1851 Navy revolvers is the most important and rare artifact from the career of this major participant in the history of the Colt company and of Colt firearms, and is worthy of the finest museum or private collection." • Desirable Factory Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Rifle
    Dec. 08, 2024

Desirable Factory Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Rifle

    Est: $45,000 - $65,000

Rare and Highly Desirable Factory Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle with R.L Wilson Letter Accompanied by a letter from world famous author and firearms expert R.L. Wilson, this is a scarce example of a factory engraved Winchester model 1866 lever action rifle that was manufactured in 1869. As Wilson writes "The model 1866 lever action was the first of the company's products not only to carry the Winchester name, but to excel in the profusion of embellishments, and the quality and quantity of decorated arms. The first 1866's bearing factory engraving appears in the early 27,000 serial number range which is approximately the same time the Ulrich's: Conrad F, John, and Herman all migrated to New Haven from Hartford. While the Ulrich's engraving patterns show influences of Gustave Young they developed patterns, styles and techniques of their own now synonymous with the Winchester name." This rifle serial number 38,583, followed soon after the earliest example of factory engraving 1866's and many of the panel scenes exhibited on this rifle can be traced through already published images and text of other factory engraved Winchester rifles. Two particular examples can be viewed in: "Winchester Engraving" by Wilson. The first appears on page 77, see serial number 38,594 which is exactly 11 numbers off this rifle. The work on this rifle is attributed to Conrad F. Ulrich and compares closely to No. 38,583. The second appears on page 80, serial number 38,586, note it's only three numbers off the rifle offered here. Also attributed to an Ulrich, the panel scenes, in particular the "zig-zag" and scalloped border appear nearly identical. For another comparison reference "The Winchester Book" by Madis, pg. 116. That rifle, serial number 38,589, falls only six numbers away and also appears nearly identical. Madis states: "because a number of guns would be chosen for engraving at one time, certain serial series of many Winchester models will have a number of engraved guns. In the 35,000 and 36,000 series we find a comparatively large number of Model 66's. This is also true in the 38,000 series." being manufactured in 1869, we can now attribute the engraving of this rifle to the hand of John Ulrich. The rifle has a octagon barrel, full-length magazine with brass forearm cap, frame, and crescent buttplate. The barrel has a dovetail mounted sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and a Henry style folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch. Factory sling swivels are mounted on the forearm cap and stock. The stock and forearm are walnut with a varnished finish. The forearm is highly figured while the stock has straight grain. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The serial number is stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger. The frame, forearm cap, and buttplate are decorated with factory engraving. The engraving is probably the work of master engraver John Ulrich. The engraving features bold Germanic scrollwork on a fine punch-dot background and has duck and hound's head in panels on the right side of the frame and a bear's head and an inscription plate on the left side of the frame. A wolf's head is engraved in the scrollwork on the right side of the frame below the hammer. The scrollwork and borders extend to the upper tang and top of the frame, the lower tang and cartridge elevator, both sides of the forearm cap and the heel of the buttplate. An engraved banner surrounds the serial number. As Wilson concludes "serial number 38,583 occupies a special place within the evolution of Winchester, coming from those early Model 1866's which were instrumental in establishing the reputation and image of Winchester firearms in the United States of America and beyond throughout the world." He was present at Balaklava on 25 October 1854, when the 93rd routed the Russian cavalry and won themselves the title of 'The Thin Red Line'. The Times correspondent, William Howard Russell, who, standing on the hills above, could clearly see that nothing stood between the Russian cavalry and the defenceless British base but the 'thin red streak tipped with a line of steel' wrote of the 93rd: 'With breathless suspense everyone awaits the bursting of the wave [of Russian Cavalry] upon the line of Gaelic rock, but ere they came within 200 yards another deadly volley flashes from the levelled rifle, and carries terror into the Russians. They wheel about, open files right and left, and fly back faster than they came. "Brave Highlanders! Well done!" shout the spectators.' Wilson subsequently proceeded with the Regiment to India, and saw service during the Great Sepoy Mutiny, being present at the Second Relief of Lucknow and subsequent operations.

Ordnance Survey of the Peninsula of Sinai – Charles William Wilson and Henry Spenser Palmer – Part I – England, 1871 – Illustrations

    Est: -

Ordnance Survey of the Peninsula of Sinai, by Charles William Wilson and Henry Spenser Palmer. Southampton (England): Ordnance Survey Office, on the title page: 1869 (the preface is dated 1871). English. Part I (out of three). Part I of the Ordnance Survey of the Peninsula of Sinai by Charles William Wilson and Henry Spenser Palmer, under the direction of Colonel Sir Henry James, Director-General of the British Ordnance Survey. The volume contains an account of the survey of the Peninsula of Sinai, the methods of survey and the findings. Twenty plates (some in color) with illustrations, plans and sections. A photograph of Oyun Musa (The springs of Moses, Sinai) is mounted on the title page. Charles William Wilson (1836-1905) was a British Royal Engineers officer, geographer and archaeologist, a pioneer of the modern survey of Palestine. In 1868, he and the British engineer and officer Henry Spenser Palmer (1838-1893) embarked on an expedition to the Peninsula of Sinai on behalf of the Palestine Exploration Fund. The findings of the survey were published in three parts (five volumes): a review of the survey, map portfolio and three photograph portfolios. This is the first part, reviewing the survey and its archeological findings. One of the participants in the expedition was the scholar and orientalist Eduard Henry Palmer (1840-1882), who headed another expedition to Sinai in 1882 (in the midst of the 'Urabi Revolt against the British involvement in Egypt) and was murdered by Bedouins together with the other members of the expedition. [3] leaves, 323, [1] pp. + XX plates, approx. 48 cm. Good-fair condition. The leaves are detached. Stains and some creases. Small tears and wormholes to margins of several leaves (the book was fumigated). An ex-library copy (stamps to several leaves; label to inside front board).
