Dimensions : 68 x 84 cm Provenance : - Atelier de l'artiste - Collection Thyssen Bornemisza - Collection privée Monaco, acquis en 1978 auprès du précédent. Accompagné de la copie du certificat Peintre hollandais né à Amsterdam, Carel Willink est considéré comme le représentant le plus important du réalisme magique, un style de peinture utilisant la lumière, la couleur, la forme et la profondeur pour créer une atmosphère étrange, où des éléments perçus comme magiques, surnaturels ou simplement irrationnels surgissent dans un environnement réaliste. Dans les années 1960, il sera parfois associé au courant du réalisme fantastique. Le choix des sujets est également caractéristique : ses épouses sont représentées à de nombreuses reprises, 11 fois pour Wilma par exemple et Sylvia lui a servi de modèle pour la plupart de ses utilisations de nus féminins. On trouve également 16 tableaux dans lesquels les animaux sont les personnages principaux, tous dans un décor étrange et inhabituel pour eux. Dans 19 autres tableaux, le monde moderne, la science et la technologie sont peints en opposition ou en affrontement avec le monde antique. Dans ses compositions, Willink combine perfection technique, photo-réalisme et une extrême attention aux détails, pour représenter des situations mystérieuses et parfois inquiétantes. Il exercera également une importante activité de portraitiste, dans laquelle on retrouve la même maîtrise technique.

Oil on canvas, signed and dated 'Willink '58' (upper right), with Kunsthandel van Wisselingh exhibition label on the stretcher, inscribed by Sylvia Willink 'De Miereneters 1958 coll. mevr. Sylvia Willink Amsterdam' and 'carton laten zitten!' (on protective museum boards on the reverse); framed in the original frame chosen by the artist. Minor surface grime in the upper left corner, two unobtrusive tiny superficial scratches upper centre (c. 1 mm. loss of paint), fine craquelure and very light varnish yellowing in places in the depiction of the sky, right edge sl. rubbed by the frame, overall in good condition.

Three rare prints by Carel Willink (1928 - 1941)

- WILLINK, Carel (Dutch 1900 - 1983) - after. (Woman with a bird), (Sitting nude) & De Vogel [The bird]. A set of three prints: reproductions of drawings by Carel Willink, numbered '42/270' and '39/270' respectively (probably NOT by the artist). Presumably enlarged proofs. 'Woman with a bird' was published as frontispiece in the book 'Poging tot afstand' by Edgar du Perron illustrated by Carel Willink (Brussel & Maastricht, Stols, 1928). The third drawing was published as illustration of the poem 'De Vogel' by Martinus Nijhoff in the Orpheus series (No. 9, The Hague, Stols, 1941). Some handling creases, 'De Vogel' with a marginal tear and several marginal foxing spots.
