  • Walter Henry Williams, 1920-1998, Bit of Summer #3
    Dec. 14, 2024

Walter Henry Williams, 1920-1998, Bit of Summer #3

    Est: $15,000 - $25,000

Walter Henry Williams 1920-1998 Bit of Summer #3 1961 oil on board 26 x 28 inches signed, dated, and titled on verso: Colección permanente--J.M.N.R.C. No. 126 1963 Provenance: private collection, Phoenix, AZ passed by family descent from Joan Lopez and Jamie Lopez Bermudez, artist and architect who owned El Coyote Flaco, a restaurant and art gallery in Coyoacan, Mexico, who traded Williams for the painting when he lived in Mexico. This work includes some powerful imagery delivered in Williams' typical understated manner: a mature black tree, significant in its size and age, uprooted and exposed in a field of wildflowers. A group of black birds circle nearby, perhaps displaced by the tragedy; and a small cabin--someone's home-- appears now as an afterthought, in the far background, another artifact of a time and a life changed, and sadly, soon to be forgotten. Even the title given by the artist eludes to the scene being a snapshot of something much larger in scale.

Walter Henry Williams Jr. SUNFLOWERS #2 Woodcut

    Est: $800 - $1,200

Artist/Designer; Manufacturer: Walter Henry Williams Jr. (American/Danish, 1920-1998) Marking(s); notes: signed; AP; 1966 Materials: woodcut Dimensions (H, W, D): 14.5"h, 20.75"w; 22.5"h, 28.25"w frame Additional Information: Provenance: Collection of Marion and Harold Lecks, Palm Beach, Florida, thence by descent. About the diverse collection of works by Walter Henry Williams Jr., Jacques Lipchitz, Robert Brubaker, Victor Salmones, and others, the Lecks' granddaughter recalls, "These pieces were in my grandparents' Palm Beach home for as long as I can remember. They would travel the world together and collect whatever struck them as unique." Walter Henry Williams was an African American-born artist, painter, printmaker, and ceramicist who became a Danish citizen later in life. "Many black artists escaped to France, but Williams chose Denmark because his maternal grandfather, who was from the Danish West Indies, spoke well of the country. During his time in Denmark, Williams frequently traveled to the Danish island of Bornholm where his exposure to untouched nature was life-changing. He was able to free his subjects from harsh, urban settings and place them in the countryside. Children became principal themes, and birds, butterflies, sunflowers, tree roots, and the sun became key imagery symbolizing rebirth, resurrection, flight, and freedom and seemed to discover what he always wanted to say in his works. The direction of his art changed significantly - it previously reflected isolation in the city, and now, the beauty of the countryside." (source: The Walter H.
