    S. WILLIAMS "BRINGING ON TAIL HOUNDS" ENGRAVING

    Sheldon-Williams (English, 1870-1940) "Bringing on Tail Hounds" engraving print by W. Summers framed. Born in Hampshire, Inglis Sheldon-Williams was the son of a landscape painter. He travelled to Canada with his mother in 1887 where they set up a homestead in South Eastern Saskatchewan. Sheldon-Williams returned to England to study at the Slade School of Art. Between 1899 and 1904, he travelled extensively in South Africa, India and Europe, producing drawings and watercolour illustrations that were published in various periodicals in London. He spent almost ten years following his marriage in 1904 in England, exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy in London, the Paris Salon, and at a variety of other exhibitions in both London and Europe. He was an official Canadian war artist during the First World War. Size: 23.75" X 28.25" Condition: Very fine.

A forerunner of today’s photo-journalists, he combined his role as a soldier in the Second Boer War (1899-1902) with work as a journalist-illustrator for London periodicals, particularly the Sphere. He was later appointed an official Canadian War Artist in World War I, before returning to England.
