In Schreiben an Vorbesitzer Armand Gobiet bestätigten Frits Lugt (13. Nr. P*9, Michiel C. Plomp, The Dutch Drawings in the Teyler Museum, Vol. II, Artists born between 1575 and 1630, Haarlem 1997, Nr. 567; das Blatt mit 15,4x23,5 cm in ähnlichem Format wie die vorliegende Zeichnung; für die Staffage vgl. auch Inv. Nr. P*11 in gleicher Sammlung, Plomp 1997, Nr. 566)." Wir danken Frau Dr. Annemarie Stefes für ihre Beurteilung der Zeichnung auf der Grundlage einer Bilddatei. The ruins are depicted on the south-eastern side of the Palatine, seen from the south-west. Annemarie Stefes notes that although Thomas Wijck's journey to Italy is not documented, it has been passed down by contemporaries and can be assumed in view of dated drawings between 1644 and 1652. She further writes: "The monogram of the present drawing points to Wijck. In letters to the previous owner Armand Gobiet, Frits Lugt (13 August 1965) and Karel G. Boon (18 August 1965) confirmed this attribution, while Lisa Oehler (1997, p. 99) considered the sheet to be a work by Jan Both. Wijck's drawings on Italian paper often show nameless motifs, rather than the classic repertoire of Italian ruins. Among the artist's signed sheets, however, there are also stylistically related sheets that confirm the attribution, for example an Italian landscape in the museum in Haarlem, drawn in a similarly soft manner with a dabbing brush (Teylers Museum, inv. no. P*9, Michiel C. Plomp, The Dutch Drawings in the Teyler Museum, vol. II, Artists born between 1575 and 1630, Haarlem 1997, no. 567; the sheet measures 15.4x23.5 cm in format similar to the present drawing; for the staffage, see also inv. no. P*11 in the same collection, Plomp 1997, no. 566)." We would like to thank Dr Annemarie Stefes for her assessment of the drawing on the basis of an image file. P. Huys Janssen, The Hoogsteder exhibition of Dutch landscapes, Zwolle 1991).

Thomas Wijck (attributed to) (Beverwijk 1616-Haarlem 1677) Pair of rural landscapes with shepherds Oil on panel 54x41 cm - framed cm This pair of paintings fits perfectly into the pictorial production of the Dutchman Thomas Wijck. Having trained in Italy, between Rome and Naples, he had the opportunity to come into contact with the lively painting of the Bamboccianti, of which Michelangelo Cerquozzi and Peter van Laer were among the greatest experts. The two paintings can be ascribed to the mature phase of Wijk's career, when he had now returned to reside permanently in Haarlem, for the precise but material treatment of the landscape and the characters that animate the scene. Reminiscent of the Roman period remains the temple and the classical ruins present.

Dutch Painters of the Golden Age, exhibition catalogue, The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal 1990, p. 212f., no. 71 (colour ill.) In addition to genre scenes of a predominantly southern character in interiors or in front of idyllic ruined landscapes, the Flemish painter Thomas Wyck gained particular fame with Mediterranean harbour scenes. Despite his compelling depictions of groups of figures against southern harbour backdrops and painterly coastal landscapes, there is no record of Wyck travelling to Italy. However, an absence of several years from the Haarlem guild, which the former pupil Adriaen van Ostade joined, as well as architectural sketches, could indicate such a stay on site for study purposes. The view of a mountainous coastal formation and a promenade adorned with fountains behind massive brickwork emphasise the character of the far south. Special attention is paid to the novel, precious cargoes and the often no less foreign merchants, traders and servants. The Dutch clientele observes the multicultural hustle and bustle with interest. Wyck is convincing with his primarily colouristic design and the play with the effect of light. Bright red and orange, as well as the strong blue of the garments, contrast with the iridescent brown tones of the architecture and figures, some of which lie in the half-shadow. The precise elaboration of the faces and garment parts and the goods can also be found in the "Harbour Scene" in the Staatsgemäldesammlung der Münchner Pinakothek (Inv.-Nr. 4805).

A.R. (13312713) (1) (11)

RefMas121121 Signed lower left: Twijck This veduta depicts the church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli on the Capitoline Hill in Rome, built in the second half of the 13th century, with the steep, characteristic Scalinata di Aracoeli leading up to its Romanesque brick facade. To the south of the church, a considerably less steep staircase leads to the Piazza del Campidoglio, which was redesigned by Michelangelo. The staircase can be seen in the shadowed foreground of this work and is flanked at the top by the monumental statues of the Dioscuri Castor and Pollux. The author of this work, Thomas Wijck, was a versatile artist active in Haarlem. He painted interior scenes with peasants, scholars and alchemists as well as views of Italian cities and harbours which he often populated with Bamboccianti scenes. Topographically exact works like the present composition are considerably rarer.
