Ex. -- -- Die Skulptur "House" entstand nach einem viktorianischen Reihenhaus in East London in der Grove Road 193, Mile End. Whiteread schuf einen Betonabguss der Innenseite des gesamten dreistöckigen Hauses, Keller, Erdgeschoss und erster Stock, einschließlich Treppen und Erkern. Diese außergewöhnliche und einfallsreiche öffentliche Skulptur wurde nach nur drei Monaten wieder abgerissen. Die Künstlerin nimmt, fasziniert vom Negativraum, Abdrücke mit Gips, Gummi, Kunststoffen und anderen Materialien von Alltagsgegenständen und architektonischen Details bis hin zum Abdruck ganzer Räume, hier sogar eines ganzen Hauses. Diese weißen Objekte bilden einerseits den Gegenstand ab und dokumentieren Gebrauchsspuren, andererseits spiegeln sie ihren Gegenstand und haben aufgrund des weißen Materials eine hohe Abstraktionswirkung.
