    DIANA CARGO SHIPWRECK LARGE GLAZED BLUE AND WHITE SERVING DISH

    Early 19th century A.D.. A large octagonal dish with raised lip with net border; painted scenery of a lakeside town with multiple buildings in various designs on islands, boats floating on the water and an arched bridge to the foreground; repaired. 1.36 kg total, 35.5 cm (14 in.). 'The Diana' was owned by Palmer and Co. a powerful Calcutta ship owner and was licenced by the English East India Company to sail from Calcutta or Madras to Canton. On the 14th of March 1817, she hit rocks off the Straits of Malacca and sank. The wreck was identified and recovered in 1994 by Dorian Ball of Malaysian Historical Salvors. Ex Christie's, Amsterdam, March 1995. [No Reserve]

The body with sloping walls and everted base, separately made pig-head handles, the long sides painted with a lakeside town scene composed of various building on islands, and an arched bridge to the foreground, two boats floating in the calm waters; the lid with a similar scenery and a wave-shaped handle; repaired. 2.88 kg total, 33 cm (13 in.). 'The Diana' was owned by Palmer and Co. a powerful Calcutta ship owner and was licenced by the English East India Company to sail from Calcutta or Madras to Canton. Illustrated with a frontispiece by Diana White, double borders on pp. 7-8 and initials by Lucien Pissarro, all wood-engraved by his wife Esther Pissarro. Eragny's mark at colophon. Edition limited to 226 unnumbered copies on Arches hand-made paper, of which 200 were for sale. Printed in black, green and red. The British artist and translator White (1868-1950) became friends with Esther when they were both studying at the Crystal Palace School of Art. She met Lucien through Esther. - Ref.
