    Susie Whitcombe - THE MAESTRO

    Est: $17,000 - $20,000

Oil on canvas Signed, inscribed verso. Alexis Grüss is a circus artist who was trained in the family circus at the age of seven by his father, Andre, and his uncle Alexis. During his career he tried all the disciplines of circus arts: trapeze artist, aerialist, clown, and musician. But his true talent is rooted in the old-fashioned circus art that mixes the traditions of equestrian arts and acrobatics. Grüss founded his own company in Paris in 1974, along with the actress Silvia Monfort, and established the first circus school in the country. He was in the vanguard of the revival and reinvention of the circus in France, helping earn respect for it as an art form and moving it away from a reliance on wild animals. The Cirque National Alexis Grüss, as it is now officially known, features only horses and elephants. More recently, the entire region of Provence has become an important center of circus- and street-theater arts. Susie Whitcombe, (British, b. 1957) Whitcombe studied at the Heatherley School of Art in London and has been painting portraits of horses and people in oil and watercolor for more than 30 years. She has exhibited in London, Tokyo, and Melbourne. A versatile sportswoman, she has ridden races as an amateur jockey and is also a pilot, handling Super Cubs and Tiger Moths with ease.

  • Susie Whitcombe - Marwari Mare, Pushkar Fair
    Nov. 18, 2022

Susie Whitcombe - Marwari Mare, Pushkar Fair

    Est: $18,000 - $20,000

Susie Whitcombe Marwari Mare, Pushkar Fair $18,000 - $20,000 ?It?s called the Pushkar Camel Fair, and obviously you?ll see some camels in the background. But it?s also great training for these Marwari horses. And they are absolutely fantastic. I?ve got a sketch that I painted from life, obviously I didn?t paint this there. And you know painting in India is terrifically good fun because people sort of drop chairs and sit around, they?ve got all day to watch you, as long as you don?t really mind being watched, which you get very used to. It?s fun. And then of course they jump around you and say ?right, paint me.? It?s fun, very fun. And I actually got to ride some of the Marwaris in Jaipur, where I was staying, and they?re lovely, feisty things. Oh?. they?re fantastic. And they?ve got these lovely, straight noses. People sort of draw a parallel to the Marwaris to the Arabs. The same sort of ancient warrior type, fabulous, bright thinking, strong, brave horses. But you know, they?ve got these amazing ears and they?ve got a straight, very straight.? - Susie Whitcombe

    Nov. 22, 2020

SUSIE WHITCOMBE - TROTTING ON THE GREY, WICKHAM HORSE FAIR

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Susie Whitcombe British, b. 1957 Trotting on the Grey, Wickham Horse Fair Oil on board Signed & inscribed en verso Notable as the birthplace of William of Wykeham, the founder of Winchester College and New College, Oxford, the small village of Wickham in Hampshire has a rich history dating back to Roman times. After the Norman Conquest a church was established and the manor gifted to a loyal subject of King William. In 1269 a descendant, Roger de Scures, was granted a charter by King Henry III to hold a weekly market and thus Wickham, as it is known today, and its associated horse fair were established. Held annually on May 20, Wickham Fair is one of two English horse fairs that can trace its roots to the 13th century. Bareback parades with ponies decorated in ribbons and regalia dominate the event attended by Romany horse traders from all over the country. Today, modern fair rides accompany the festivities. Romany cobs are tied up outside what used to be the local pub in anticipation for their turn on the running track, where buyers gather to view the selection and partake in the drink and merriment associated with the historic fair.
