BIOGRAPHY: George William Whitaker, tonalist landscape, still life and marine painter, was called the "Dean of the Providence Painters". His largest scale canvases are typically still lifes, and his landscapes seldom include people, or animals. He was also a teacher, becoming the first instructor in oil painting at the Rhode Island School of Design. Born in Fall River, Massachusetts, Whitaker spent his student years in New York where he apprenticed to an engraver uncle. While still in his youth, his talent was recognized by the renowned landscape artists George Inness and Alexander Wyant and others associated with the Hudson River School. With this encouragement the young artist went to study in France under Laszlo DePaal, an Hungarian artist. There his paintings became heavily influenced by Barbizon painters of the Fontainebleu, especially the talented Francois Millet. George Whitaker's excellence in art is equaled to his contribution to the development of a Rhode Island art community. He was instrumental in recognizing the need for an organization to nurture and support the talented artists within the state. The Providence Art Club was formally instituted in 1880 by Whitaker and his friends Sydney Burleigh, E.M. Bannister and Charles Walter Stetson. The club provided not only a formal association with fellow artists but a public forum in which to present his work. Whitaker was also a founder of the Providence Water Color Club. In 1895, Whitaker moved into the "Fleur de Lys" studio of Sydney Burleigh.

George William Whitaker (1841 - 1916) Summer Landscape

      Est: $800 - $1,200

George William Whitaker (1841 - 1916) Watercolor and gouache on paper, signed lower left "G. W. Whitaker" and dated 1903, painting measures 13.5 x 17 and 22 x 24.5 inches. A Fall River native, was one of the four founders of the Providence Art Club in 1880, along with Edward M. Bannister, Charles Walter Stetson, and Sydney Burleigh. Having studied in Paris with Laszlo De Paal, his work was influenced by the Barbizon School of landscape painters, where natural scenes became the subjects of paintings rather than being mere backdrops. He is best known for his Tonalist landscapes, which he developed in his years at Barbizon and Fontainebleau. Often called the “dean of Providence painters,” Whitaker promoted collegiality among artists and was comfortable working with other painters. In 1895 he joined fellow artist, Sydney Burleigh in Burleigh’s Fleur de Lys building, a few doors down the hill from the Providence Art Club. He was the first instructor in oil painting at the Rhode Island School of Design. He was also a founder of the Providence Water Color Club. He exhibited at the National Academy in 1867 and 1869 and the Boston Art Club throughout the 1880s. Whitaker’s achievements in art were equal to his efforts to create, via the Providence Art Club, an organization which nurtured and supported talented Rhode Island artists.

George William Whitaker (1841-1916) 'Barbizon Landscape with a Country Road'

      Est: $700 - $900

Oil on canvas, 18" x 23 1/2", there is a partial obscure signature and date in the painting lower right, the early label on the back is from the gallery of Charles G. Calder who was a well known Providence, R.I. painting dealer, also on the back is a partial label from Whitaker studios. This is a fine Barbizon style landscape painting by American artist George William Whitaker. Whitaker was a teacher and important painter in Providence R.I. and was known as an American tonalist, influenced by George Inness and Alexander Wyant. At a young age he traveled to Paris where his paintings became heavily influenced by the Barbizon painters of the Fontainebleu, especially the talented Francois Millet. George Whitaker's excellence in art is equal to his contribution to the development of a Rhode Island art community. He was instrumental in recognizing the need for an organization to nurture and support the talented artists within the state. The Providence Art Club was formally instituted in 1880 by Whitaker and his friends Sydney Burleigh, E.M. Bannister and Charles Walter Stetson.
