He has won countless medals and awards for his long career in watercolors, with his subjects ranging from colorful exotic birds, California landscapes, Native American subjects and traditional Western themes. This is an impressive work, likely New Mexico, boasting vibrant colors with two nearly abstract figures in colorful apparel on horses, dwarfed by the landscape that surrounds them. Signed in lower left corner, this piece has proved popular by clients visiting the Goldberg Auction's office. 15 x 21 1/2" watercolor on paper, handsomely framed to 25 1/2 x 31 1/2 and in excellent condition.     Title: "The Fruit Market" measures 22" x 30" Bio: Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Frederic Whitaker began his working career as an apprentice designer with W. J. Feeley and Co., manufacturers of metal-ware, where he soon rose to head of design. He went on to work with Gorham Manufacturing Company and Tiffany & Co., both noted producers of fine silver, and later bought and built up two companies on his own, Foley and Dugan in Providence and G.H. Seffert in New York. During this time Whitaker was also actively painting, working mainly in watercolors, and in 1949 he retired from business to devote all his attention to painting, writing, and art-related philanthropic activities. Whitaker was a member of the National Academy of Design, served seven years as president of the American Watercolor Society,[1] and founded Audubon Artists,[2] whose purpose is to speak for all aspects of the visual arts.

Note: Frederic Whitaker was an important American representational watercolorist who exhibited extensively throughout the country and won over 150 awards during his career. Whitaker was an active member of the American Watercolor Society, among other arts organizations, and served as AWS president from 1949-1956. He was a National Academician, a frequent juror and wrote two books and many articles about his craft. The present work is the second slightly re-worked version of the watercolor ''Military Prison'' that was painted circa 1952. In this version, Whitaker modifies some architectural elements on the background buildings and enhances the details of the hanging clothes and lantern at the left. Whitaker wrote about this painting in his 1965 book ''Guide to Painting Better Pictures'': ''The great simple square of the light building, contrasted against the dark, ominous sky and the foreground masses, would be overpowering were it not for the lone figure of the soldier which attracts the eye and then sends it on an exploratory journey about the scene.'' (F. Whitaker, p. 18). This painting was widely exhibited throughout the country between fall 1953 and summer 1963 before the artist gave the painting to San Diego art dealer Arvilla Huney.
