James Abbott McNeill Whistler Sold at Auction Prices

Figure painter, Painter, Etcher, Lithographer, Caricaturist, b. 1834 - d. 1903

Artist James McNeill Whistler was an important influence in four major art schools: Realism, Aestheticism, Impressionism, and Post-Impressionism. A proponent of art for art's sake, he titled many works to point at the relationship between art and music. James McNeill Whistler's prints were among the first works by an American in Europe to incorporate Japanese influences.

As a developing artist, James McNeill Whistler studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Russia. After his father's death, he studied drawing and mapmaking at West Point. He learned how to make etchings while working for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. Many of James Abbott McNeill Whistler's etchings date from the time he spent in Venice, when he wanted to portray Venice as its locals perceived it. If you favor etching artwork, you can find many fine examples of etchings for sale at auctions and galleries

This scene depicts the 'Sotoportego e Corte de le Carozze', a stone passage with a timbered roof giving access to the Campo Santa Margarita, in Venice. Indeed, this setting allowed the artist to explore the creation of depth through the sharp contrast of light and shade, with the dark, heavy entrance to the tunnel leading into the bright street beyond.

  • James Whistler (1834-1903), Billingsgate, Etching
    Feb. 25, 2025

    James Whistler (1834-1903), Billingsgate, Etching

    Est: $450 - $750

Description: James A. M. Whistler (American, 1834-1903), Billingsgate, Etching, 1859, signed and dated in plate, depicting crowds gathering around sailboats with bridge in the distance, matted and framed. Frame size: 15 in. x 20 in. James Abbott McNeill Whistler was a seminal American artist known for his paintings and etchings. He painted in a style which emphasized layers of wet paint, gradually building tonal contrasts much like his contemporary edouard Manet. Born 1834 in Lowell, MA, he and his family moved to St. Petersburg, Russia in 1842 for his father’s job as a railway engineer. Whistler studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts at only 11 years old, returning to the United States with his mother after his father’s death in 1849. He briefly attended the United State Military Academy at West Point before being dismissed for disobedience and poor grades. Arriving in Paris in 1855, with little money and few prospects, he fell into the milieu of Henri Fantin-Latour, Gustave Courbet, and Charles Baudelaire. The artist infamously sued the British art critic John Ruskin in 1877, who scathingly attacked Whistler’s painting Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket (c. 1875) in a review. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Musee d’Orsay in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Tate Gallery in London, among others. (artnet.com) Measurements: Height: of plate 5 3/4 in. x Width: 8 3/4 in. Condition: Good condition, some minor toning to paper, patch of discoloration center of top edge, likely from mounting tape, minor stain lower left corner, not viewed out of frame. Notice to bidders: The absence of a condition report does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections, or the conditions of aging.
