Sophie Whettnall Art for Sale at Auction

b. 1973 -

Born in 1973 in Brussels, where she lives and works, multidisciplinary artist Sophie Whettnall practices video, performance, drawing and painting. She was awarded the Young Painting Prize in 1999 and enjoys international recognition.

Since the 1990s, Sophie Whettnall's work has reflected on the forces that define our relationship to the world around us, materializing and documenting them. Sophie Whettnall concentrates on light among other things: she analyzes the presence, the zones of passage and absence. With a subtle aesthetic, his work is both sensitive and powerful, based on a dialectical tension and an attempt to dialogue between concepts and contradictory perceptions: between sweetness and sensuality, yin and yang, femininity and masculinity ...His work also contributes, by his own admission, to a form of autobiographical disclosure.

As usual in the exhibitions of Brussels artists organized at the CENTRALE, Sophie Whettnall was invited to choose an international artist to exhibit at her side. She has selected paintings, drawings, watercolors and etchings of Etel Adnan. At the crossroads of East and West, the work of Etel Adnan, born in Beirut in 1925, immerses itself in the richness of the hot lands, the hot sun or the rugged mountains and adorns itself with a literary transcribed in painting, since the painter is also a writer and also collaborated with directors for the theater.

The subtitle of the exhibition, The ice floe, the forest and the stars, evokes the world of the Belgian artist, as well as that of Adnan. A formal dialogue is established between the two artists, a shared, intimate and personal vision of the landscape, the light and its transparencies.
