      WARREN WHEELOCK (AMERICAN, 1880-1960)

      Salute to the 22nd DAR (NYAF 75) , sgn. l.l. Wheelock, titled on stretcher; old Christie's sticker; o/c, 32 by 22 in.; framed 34 by 24 in., Wheelock was also a self-taught sculptor and illustrator. Born in Sutton, MA he spent most of his childhood in Webster. He was a descendant of the founder of Dartmouth College and Ralph Waldo Emerson. He died in New Mexico. His works have been exhibited in the NY Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Modern Museum of Art. He is in the permanent collection of the Whitney, Brooklyn Museum, Philadelphia Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago. His 1947 bronze 18' statute of Revolutionary War hero General Von Steuben stands at the entrance of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His lifesize bronze of Babe Ruth "Sulton of Swat" was acquired by the New York Yankees and installed at its headquarters. He also did bronzes of Lincoln, Washington, and Walt Whitman.
