Three from the volume - The Slowcoach, by E V Lucas - sold with a copy of the book, another from the volume - Mary's Meadow and Other Tales of Fields and Flowers, by Juliana Horatia Ewing - sold with a copy of the book, another pen and ink study of two figures and a dog seated beside a fire and one other framed study - shipping on the river, all signed and inscribed. Sold with a collection of seventeen books illustrated by Mary Wheelhouse, by authors including: Juliana Horatia Ewing, Mrs Molesworth, Mrs Gaskell and others (23 items in total). Extract written by Mary Wheelhouse for Contemporary Illustrations....'My greatest pleasure being those charming stories by Mrs Ewing....perhaps one of the nicest children's books I ever illustrated was W G Lucas' Slowcoach....'

Wheelhouse (fl. 1895-1947) Mary V. Wheelhouse (fl. 1895-1947) was a painter and illustrator of childrens books, producing some excellent colour plates for books in the first half of the 20th century. Born in Yorkshire, she quickly decided that art was to her career, she studied at the Academie Delecture in Paris along with Scarborough School of Art. She then went on to illustrate for The Adventures of Merrywinkle, Easter Eggs, Little Women, Holy House and Ridges Row among many others.
