  • WHEATSTONE CHARLES: (1802-1875) English Scientist
    Mar. 25, 2012

    WHEATSTONE CHARLES: (1802-1875) English Scientist

    Est: £300 - £400

WHEATSTONE CHARLES: (1802-1875) English Scientist and Inventor of many items including the Stereoscope. Wheatstone also developed the Wheatstone Bridge, used to measure an unknown electrical resistance, and is a major figure in the development of telegraphy. A.L.S., C Wheatstone, one page, 8vo, Conduit Street, 27th March 1843, to a gentleman. Wheatstone announces that he cannot send his correspondent the Electro-magnetic Chronoscope tomorrow, but that he shall have it by Saturday, explaining 'The instrument itself has long been finished and I have made experiments with it, but the workman who was to fit it in its case &c has disappointed me.' In concluding he confirms that the cost will be 16 guineas. VG In 1840, Wheatstone introduced his chronoscope, for measuring minute intervals of time, which was used in determining the speed of a bullet or the passage of a star. In this apparatus an electric current actuated an electro-magnet, which noted the instant of an occurrence by means of a pencil on a moving paper. It is said to have been capable of distinguishing 1/7300 part of a second (137 microsecond), and the time a body took to fall from a height of one inch (25 mm).
