    Oil on canvas, standing female nude, signed lower right "James P. Wharton", unframed; 20"W, 24"H; craquelure, scattered losses to paint, diagonal scratch line across face as shown in photos---James Pearce Wharton was born in Waterloo, SC, in 1893, and died in Washington, DC, in 1963. Biography from the Archives of AskArt states that he studied at "Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Dijon, France; Lander College; Wofford College; Duke University (A.B.); Univ. Guanajuato, Mexico (M.F.A.); Maryland AI; and with Wayman Adams, Leon Kroll, Robert Brackman, Maurice Davidson." His works have been included in numerous exhibitions, winning various awards; and he has works in the Smithsonian as well as in The Johnson Collection Gallery, Spartanburg, SC. He also taught and was an art professor for many years. (Inv. 20)
