Henri Matthieu (Han) Wezelaar was an important representative of Dutch modernism. After his experience with expressionism and neoclassicism in Paris, he returns to Amsterdam, where he wins many important contracts that make him famous. His work is selected for representation at the World's Fair in Paris in 1931 and in Brussels in 1935. He also presents his sculptures at the Venice Biennale in 1936 and 1938. In 1939 he exhibited at the International Exhibition to open the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, also co-organized the first Rodin exhibition in the Netherlands. After the war, it retained its distinctive neoclassical character and created several public sculptures: Rembrandt (1969) or The Good Samaritan (1955).
