    Dec. 05, 2024

Edward Weston Nude, [Charis], Santa Monica, 1936

    Est: $20,000 - $30,000

WESTON, EDWARD (1886–1958) Nude, [Charis], Santa Monica, 1936, likely printed early 1940s. Gelatin silver print, dry-mounted to card, 9 1/2 x 7 5/8 inches (243 x 193 mm), initialed "EW" and dated at lower right in pencil, the mount verso with full signature and title in Weston's hand in pencil, negative number 227 N in pencil at upper right, the "Art Lending Service of the Museum of Modern Art" label completed in typewriter mounted at upper right. Minor silvering noted to extreme edges of print, several minuscule indentations noted in raking light, not breaking the emulsion (most of these pinpoint, and probably in the emulsion itself). Fully signed lifetime prints of Weston's magnificent nude portrait of his wife-to-be Charis are quite rare in commerce. In the early 1940s, when the present example was likely prepared, Weston had stopped signing the front mount with his full signature and negative date, using initials and negative date. He had written "I will be more widely acclaimed and my work sought for after I am gone. I must realize that every print I send out (God forgive the portraits) with my signature is going to be severely criticized by those who know" (from the Daybooks, 1930). As his Parkinsonism progressed and his writing became more labored, this must have become ever more a concern. In the earlier part of the decade, he still signed and titled the reverse of the mounts, as was done here, stopping even that in the late 1940s. Fully signed later lifetime prints of this, one of the most iconic photographs of the twentieth century, are quite rare and exceptionally desirable. Est: $6,000 - $9,000

EDWARD WESTON (1886-1958) Egg Slicer. 1930; printed circa 1953-54 by Brett Weston. Silver contact print, the image measuring 8x10 inches (20.3x25.4 cm.), with the Estate of Edward Weston stamp with the number "78" in pencil on print verso; accompanied by a paper folder with The Photographs of Edward Weston/Arizona Board of Regents label and the number "25 M #78" in pencil. Provenance A California Collection Five different images of the egg slicer have been located. He included one in the Delphic exhibition in 1930. Another was illustrated in a review in Theatre Arts Monthly, which was probably the same used in his show at De Young in San Francisco that fall - and it sold in both cases. Weston reacted: "I suppose it is purchased because it's "modern." I am so sick of the word! My squash is just as "modern." One's spirit of approach may be contemporary, but subject matter is immaterial, and fine art of any period is "modern," and much that is labeled "modern" is very academic, decked out with a few frills." Est: $20,000 - $30,000

EDWARD WESTON (1886-1958) Cypress, Rock, Stone Crop. 1930. Silver print, the image measuring 9½x7½ inches (24.1x19.1 cm.), the mount 18x14 inches (45.7x35.5 cm.), with Weston's signature and date and his initials and edition notation 1/50 in pencil, on mount recto, and the negative notation "42T" in pencil on mount verso. Provenance A California Collection This vintage print was likely the first successful print that Weston made of this seminal image. The soft evening light falls on the North Shore of Pt. Lobos, creating a dreamy atmosphere in which bleached cypresses, granite, and stone crop form constellations against the dark background of the cliff. This structure still stands today, 89 years later, with only minor alterations to the cypress. Weston's two-decade career at Point Lobos, starting in 1929, is epitomized by his unrivaled ability to distill moments in the outside world to represent essences of his inward world.

Provenance A California Collection In 1939, Weston decided to give five hundreds of his finest prints to the Huntington Library in Pasadena. Although he emphasized the work he did on his Guggenheim grants from 1937 through 1939, for a number of reasons, he included eighteen from this series in 1936. Of the 832 Project Prints made in the fifties to represent his life's work, twenty-three were from this group. Clearly, in Weston's opinion, this series would contribute in a major way to the picture he hoped to leave of himself. Reproduced Amy Conger, (CCP/The University of Arizona), cat no. 934/1936

He saved about forty negatives from the work he did while he was in Tennessee, and at least twenty-five of them were from Nashville. Most of those were of William Edmondson and his sculpture. He made at least one other exposure of Edmondson in this pose, T41-ED-4. In both, the sculptor is in his studio along with the instruments and symbols of his trade: his toolbox., blocks of stone, a carving, marble chips, dust all over the ground, and even a ladder. The black space inside his workshop isolates the important components almost as if they were parts of an equation. The differences between the pictures are, in fact, slight: in the other, his face is a little more frontal and relaxed; his jaw a little more to the left; maybe the background is not quite as dark since the frame of the screen door is visible. Weston probably took two so that one could be published in Leaves of Grass and he would still have a variant. Both images were extremely popular. The picture may have had particular appeal to liberals since it shows a black artist who partly overcame difficult constraints dictated by the times. It is said that Hearst, owner of Vanity Fair, refused to use any of Louise Dahl-Wolfe's photographs of Edmondson taken in 1933, or run anything on him, because he was black. Some see it as a representation of a naïve and direct artisan discovered by Weston, unaware that in 1937 Edmondson was the first black man to have a one-man show at the Museum of Modern Art. In 1948, Edward sent Nancy Newhall a print for her study on black culture. EDWARD WESTON (1886-1958) My Little Grey Home in the West [with skull]. 1943; printed circa 1950. Silver print, the image measuring 9⅝x7⅝ inches (24.4x19.4 cm.), the mount 16⅜x13⅝ inches (41.6x34.6 cm.), with Weston's initials and negative date in pencil on mount recto, and the negative notation "N43-CH&L-1" in pencil on mount verso. Provenance Acquired directly from the Photographer; by descent; The Estate of James H Newberry Jr Charis' pose and the skull were probably selected because they were dramatic. The bleached and broken steer skull also counterbalances the gentle and perfectly stylized white dove near the bottom right. Edward gave a print to B. Ullrich-Zuckerman for Christmas 1943. She responded appreciatively and enthusiastically. On January 14, he reacted strongly to the diverse responses he was getting and replied: Your gorgeous response to Xmas package came just when I needed to renew my faith in certain heretofore admired friends (or) in the opinions of those friends that I lost faith in … when they write and ask if you are upset by war, or upset because you can't go out on Pt. Lobos, or label you surrealist (O my God!) … all because of new trends… One of these friends is a figure of some import in M. of M.A., N.Y… I am so ashamed of her that I'll not use names. I wish I had your enthusiastic endorsement when I answered… Reproduced Amy Conger, Edward Weston: Photographs from the Collection of the Center for Creative Photography (CCP/The University of Arizona), cat. no. 1723/1943

Heading: Author: Weston, Edward Title: My Camera on Point Lobos Place Published: Yosemite National Park & Boston Publisher:Virginia Adams & Houghton Mifflin Date Published: 1950 Description: 79, [2] pp. Thirty fine-screen halftone plates from photographs by Weston. 36.8x30.4 (14½x12”), comb-bound boards, pictorial jacket in two pieces laid in. First Edition.Weston‘s archetypal landscape, Point Lobos – or as the Spaniards named it Punta de los Lobos Marinos / Point of the Sea Wolves. ”My work is always ahead of what I say about it. I am simply a means to an end: I cannot, at the time, say why I record a thing in a certain way, nor why I record it at all. The artist is an instrument through which inarticulate mankind speaks: he may be a prophet who at a needed moment points the way, forming the future, or he may be born at a time when his work is a culmination, a flowering in soil already prepared. If my work has vitality it is because I have done my part in revealing to others the living world about them, showing to them what their own untrained eyes have missed.” - Edward Weston From his Daybook, March, 1931 as reprinted in the Foreword.
