Bristol.- Sandby (Paul, 1731-1809), attributed to. View from Kings Weston Estate looking towards Penpole Point and Lodge, the River Avon and Severn Estuary in the distance; Hotwells at Bristol from the shore, a pair of views of Bristol and its environs, pastels on thick laid paper, both affixed to board support, with black ink borders, each approx. 500 x 680 mm. (19 3/4 x 26 3/4 in), old attributions to Sandby verso in pencil and on a printed label to each, some spotting, rubbing, and surface dirt, unframed, [late 18th century] (2) Provenance: Ex-collection of "Mde. La Baronne du Palland" (inscribed on label verso) ⁂ Traditionally understood to be by the landscape watercolourist Paul Sandby. The competent landscapes are possibly an example of the artist's brief experimentation of the pastel medium, but we have been unable to trace any similar examples for comparison.
