Joseph Walter West, RWS, British 1860-1933- An eighteenth-century idyll; pencil and watercolour heightened with white and scratching out on paper, signed with monogram and numbered '115' (lower left), inscribed '"An Eighteenth Century Idyll" / 3 Aug 1928 / Sent to R.W.S. Winter Ex 1928' verso, 34.5 x 45.7 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: West studied at St John's Wood Art School and the Royal Academy Schools before travelling to Paris, where he attended the Académie Julian. He was a successful painter and lithographer, designing several London Underground posters between 1916-31, and serving as the Vice-President of The Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours.

Signed oil painting on board. Measures 11-in. x 14-in. image size. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Joseph Walter West RWS (British 1860 - 1933) Scottish coastal scene oil on board, signed Note: Born 3 May 1860 in Hull. Studied at York under Edwin Moore then at St John's Wood Art School 1883, at the R.A. Schools 1884-7 and at the AcadÚmie Julian , Paris. Exhibited at the R.A. from 1885 and at the R.B.A. He painted exclusively landscapes from around 1910. Died at Northwood, Middlesex, 27 June 1933. In 1983 The Tate acquired a landscape by West dated 1913 and his work is held in numerous other public and private collections.
