Biography from the Archives of askART: Nat Werner (1908-1991) A sculptor, he worked in both figurative and abstract styles and with nearly every sculptural method, including terra-cotta, carved wood and stone, welded steel and found-object assemblage. Mr. Werner was born on Dec. 8, 1907, in New York City and was brought up in the Hebrew Orphan Asylum. He studied at City College and the Art Students League and had his first exhibition in 1937 at the A.C.A. Gallery, where he continued to exhibit until 1963. Studied: College of the City of New York; Art Students League; Robert Laurent; Columbia University. Member: Sculptors Guild; American Artists Congress. One-Person Exhibitions: ACA Gallery, New York (ten shows, 1937-1962). Group Exhibitions: Whitney Museum of American Art (1936-1946); Museum of Modern Art ("15 American Sculptors," 1940); Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1942, 1943, 1945, 1946); Art Institute of Chicago (1942, 1943); Metropolitan Museum of Art (1941); Brussels International Exposition (1958); Fairmount Park Internationals; American Federation of Arts ("12 American Sculptors," 1958); Art: USA: 58 (1958); Sculptors Guild (1940, 1952, 1953, 1955, 1957, 1960, 1964). Awards: First Honorable Mention, New York World's Fair Sculpture Competition (1939); First Honorable Mention, New Orleans Sculpture Competition; First Prize, East Hampton Regional Show (1952); Second Prize, East Hampton Regional Show (1954).
