      Julius Wentscher II (1881-1961) 'Balinese dancers', signed and dated 'Bali 1931' lower right, canvas. H. 47 cm. W. 64.5 cm. Provenance: collection Paul de Bont. According to de Bont, one of the dancers is probably Ni Pollok. She danced in the 1930s with Ciblun the Legong dance in Kedaton. Because of the gong and the banyan tree in the background, he was quite sure this was painted in Kedaton, Bali.

The scene is gloriously beautiful, as the viewer watches as a young lady gazine away, captured fluently by Julius’ artistic prowess. Captured here is a gorgeous Balinese young girl. Her dark and thick hair, pulled up with an intricate yellow headpiece and traditionally pierced ears are a sight to behold, as it is a proof of a culture that is timeless and filled with mysticism. Due to the expert, smooth blending of the muted yet luminescent colours, there is most certainly a feeling of classic art, fantasy and mystery. This painting is rich and filled with depth and truly something superb to behold.
