Good condition Wen-Ying Tsai was a pioneer in cybernetic sculpture and kinetic art in America Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 30,000 Euro In the 1950s and 1960s, kinetic art was in a vibrant and internationally successful period. Cybernetic objects were even stronger related to their environment, as they reacted promptly to external influences and manipulations by the viewer. Wen-Ying Tsai was one of the main protagonists of these art developments in America. Condition: The two-piece kinetic sculpture is in overall good condition with slight signs of age. One metal rod is presumably slightly bent. The functionality has not been tested. The overall dimensions are 150 x 32 x 32 cm and 101 x 32x 32 cm. Wen-Ying Tsai (1928-1913) Wen-Ying Tsai was born in Amoy, China, and received his early artistic training in traditional Chinese painting. In 1939, he moved to Shanghai, where he studied engineering at the Ta Tung University. In 1950 he immigrated to the USA and studied mechanical engineering at Michigan University. After graduating in 1953 he went to New York, where he worked as an engineer in the development of laboratories for atomic research. Following his artistic interest, he took advanced courses at the Art Students League in Manhattan. His first solo exhibition was held at Ruth Sherman Gallery in New York in 1961. He became an US citizen in 1962 and decided to devote himself entirely to kinetic and cybernetic art. Since 1971 Wen-Ying Tsai has mainly lived in Paris. Examples of his works can be found, for instance, at the Tate Gallery in London. () Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
