      Est: $800 - $1,200

AN ENGLISH MAP SHOWING CALIFORNIA AS AN ISLAND. WELLS, EDWARD. 1667-1727. A New Map of North America Shewing its Principal Divisions.... [London: 1704.] Double-page engraved map with hand-coloring, 370 x 500 mm, float mounted and framed. From the 1550s to the 1700s, global mapmakers labored under the misconception that California was an island rather than a part of mainland North America. Originally caused by confusion over the Baja Peninsula, the error was perpetuated by the idea that California represented an 'earthly paradise' separate from the rest of the world.

      Oct. 02, 2021

Wells - Map of the World published 1718 - A New Map of the Terraqueous Globe…

      Est: $1,000 - $2,000

This world map is entitled A New Map of the Terraqueous Globe according to the ancient Discoveries and most general Divisions of it into Continents and Oceans and was Edward Wells and engraved by Michael Burghers. It was published after 1718 by Edward Wells in Oxford and London. The map was first published in 1700. This is a charming double hemisphere world map. There is a legend in North America that references some people's belief that it was ancient Atlantis. It shows California as an island, no Great Lakes, and no Mississippi River. This is the last map that shows California as an island (from the original publication date). It shows an incomplete New Holland attached to New Guinea, partial New Zealand coast, and no Southern Continent. Michael Burghers (1653-1727) was a Dutch illustrator, engraver, and artist that was predominantly based in England. He studied under and succeeded David Loggan as Engraver to the University. Edward Wells (1667-1727) was a clergyman, mathemetician, and geographer. He was a teacher to William, Duke of Gloucester. The duke died at the young age of 11 and thus Wells dedicated this map to him.

France. Edward Wells, A New Map of France Shewing Its Principal Divisions Cheif Cities, Townes, Ports Rivers, Mountains, &c..., 1701 (circa). Hand Color. This boldly engraved map divides France into its historical provinces. Towns and cities are named, and there is some nice topographical detail. Wells has included lines sketched along the coastlines, labeled Sansons Coast that highlight the variations between this map and Sanson's map of the region. The ornate title cartouche includes a dedication to William, Duke of Gloucester and is adorned with the Royal Arms. At top right there is a scale of English miles "According to Vulgar Computation" and "According to Norwoods Computation." A key at bottom right explains the abbreviations used on the map.

A New Map of the Land of Canaan and Parts Adjoining Shewing the Division thereof among the Twelve Tribes of Israel." Hand-colored copperplate map. 18 x 21 inches. cf. Laor 835. • From: Edward Wells. "A New Sett of Maps." London. T.W. Bonwick, no. 34. The map shows the division among the Twelve Tribes and includes an inset of Syria in the upper left portion. Mathematician and geographer Edward Wells (1667-1727) taught at Christchurch, Oxford. He intended his atlas to be a teaching tool particularly for one of his students, the young William, Duke of Gloucester. Unfortunately, William died in 1700 at the age of 11. Wells dedicated the atlas, as well as many of the individual maps, to poor young William. London, first edition 1720, (or later).
