Franz Xaver Welde (1739-1813), attributed to

    Est: €6,000 - €9,000

Portrait of a lady sewing, oil on canvas, 73 x 56 cm, framed, (Wo) Certificate: Ludwig Meyer, Archiv für Kunstgeschichte, 22 July 2004:”From 1777 onwards, Welde succeeded Georges Desmarčes, who had passed away on October 3rd, 1776, as a court painter to the Bavarian Elector. For twenty years, until his master's death, he had been Desmarčes' most important assistant and, in 1777, married his daughter. It seems to me that Welde was primarily responsible for painting the elaborate white lace, which has a three-dimensional effect and often appears like an artificial addition to the rather painterly sections in Desmarčes' portraits.” Provenance: private collection, Sweden
