Johan Wilhelm Weinmann (1683-1741) German, Set of 4 Copperplate Engravings

            Est: $200 - $400

Johan Wilhelm Weinmann (1683-1741) German, Set of 4 Copperplate Engravings. Images originally published in the 18th Century. Hand-colored and illustrated botanical images. Tags with previous gallery information on back of two of them.  Overall: 24 X 18 1/2 in.  Sight: 13 X 8 1/2 in.  #3909 .  Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was born on March 13th, 1683 in Gardelegen, Germany. What is known of his early life is that he settled in Regensburg, or Ratisbon as it was known in 1710, and found work as the assistant of an apothecary. Weinmann was prosperous enough to be able to afford to purchase a house and apothecary shop of his own just two years later. However, this led to him becoming embroiled in a drawn-out dispute with local apothecaries and physicians, brought about by his appointment in 1713 as Hospital Apothecary. The dispute was only resolved in 1715 with the intervention of the Town Council, who officially absolved him of any wrongdoing. He created a botanical garden in Regensburg, published the Catalogus Alphabetico Ordine Exhibens Pharmaca in 1721, and contributed botanical notes as “Observationes und Anmerkungen” in the Breslauer Sammlungen the following year. Weinmann went on to become a town councilor in 1723, a commercial assessor in 1725, and a city assessor in 1733. His first wife, Isabella Catharina Fürst, was the daughter of an affluent wine merchant who died in 1730. In 1732 he remarried to Christine Catharina Pfaffenreuther, daughter of a leading town official. A year later he bought out another apothecary shop which had gone bankrupt and within a year it was turning a profit. His business interests flourished so much that he was finally able to completely indulge his one passion: botany. He is most famous for his creation of the Florilegium Phytanthoza Iconographia between 1737 and 1745, an ambitious project which resulted in eight folio volumes with more than 1,000 hand-colored engravings of several thousand plants. The work is thought to have inspired similar works, such as the Japanese medicinal work “Honzo Zufu” (1828) by Iwasaki Tsunemasa and “Somoku-dzusetsu” (1856) by Yokusai Iinuma. Weinmann employed the youthful Georg Dionysius Ehret as illustrator, who used a newly developed printing process involving mezzotint that allowed greater detail and shading, and was finished by hand-coloring. The publisher Seuter and Ridinger turned out the first three volumes, while Johann Jakob Haid managed the later volumes. After the first 500 plates Ehret left the project to find better pay as a painter and plate copier for other companies. Johann Georg Nicolaus Dieterichs (1681-1737) wrote the botanical text for the first twenty-five plates, and was succeeded by his son Ludwig Michael Dieterichs (1716-1747). The work was completed after Weinmann’s death in 1741 by Ambrosius Karl Bieler (1693-1747). Phytanthoza Iconographia is highly regarded to this day for the quality of its color plates, and the accuracy of its images compared with previous attempts at cataloging herbs and plants. Weinmann’s prints are so popular that they continue to appear as decorations today in parts of Northern Europe.

WEINMANN, JOHANN WILHELM. 1683-1741. Thesaurus rei herbariae. Augsburg: Johann Elias Haid, 1787. 4 volumes. Folio (395 x 258 mm). Engraved title pages in each volume with hand-colored highlights in red and gold; 1,025 hand-colored engraved plates (14 double-page) after G. D. Ehret, J. E. Ridinger, B. Seutter and J. J. Haid. Contemporary calf, spines with 5 raised bands, morocco lettering pieces in red and yellow. Bindings rubbed and chipped at corners and spine ends, 1 lettering piece detached, marginal worming through first 50 plates of volume IV, scattered spotting. Provenance: By descent from the Rivalier von Meysenbug and von Grunelius families. First revised edition. Printed in color from the original mezzotint plates (finished by hand) from Weinmann's influential masterwork Phytanthoza iconographia (1737-1745) issued without the descriptive text. Rare and valuable record of the plants cultivated in the early 18th century, based on Weinmann's own collection. The high artistic standard of its plates, became an important source for copyists, and appeared in designs for Meissen porcelain. Many are 'of particular interest on account of the colour printing, especially the plates of Aloes and Cactus depicted in pots of different designs, and the folding plates of gourds' (Dunthorne 327, first edition); Nissen 2126 (notes); Pritzel 10139; Stafleu/Cowan 17050.

From "Phytanthoza Iconographia," ca. 1737-1745. A stunning trio of botanical engravings from Johann Weinmann’s "Phytanthoza Iconographia" including a palm tree entitled "Caranna, Ca-ragne, Caran" (n. 304), a blooming cactus accompanied by other species entitled "A. Onobrychis Saint foin. B. Ophioglossum manis Longifolium. D. Ophioglossum bilingue …" (n. 765), and a palm leaf entitled "Faufel Pinas vel Areca fructu rotun-diore, Xunde Binung" (n. 502). All three are mezzotint engravings printed in color and finished by hand with opaque watercolor at the time of printing. Furthermore, all three are set in matching, hand-finished frames with all framing to full museum standards - the inner borders comprised of gold fretted square motifs over a crimson ground, the outer borders embellished with an elegantly mottled seafoam green - making for a dazzling ensemble. Size of sight views: 13.625" L x 8.75" W (34.6 cm x 22.2 cm) Size of frames: 26.25" L x 21.25" W (66.7 cm x 54 cm) Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was a botanist, an apothecary, as well as a scholar. He is best known for creating a masterful florilegium entitled "Phytanthoza Iconographia" over the course of nearly 10 years from 1737 to 1745. This impressive undertaking produced a pioneering work comprised of eight folio volumes with over 1000 hand-colored engravings of plants with species numbering several thousand. It is still among the most ambitious and comprehensive botanical references. Furthermore, the artwork is stunning. Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770) is the artist who created most of the images. Ehret learned to draw from his father when he was very young in Heidelberg, Germany. Also a gardener, Ehret worked for the Elector of Heidelberg and the Margrave of Badaen-Durlac. In addition to being one of the most impressive European botanical artists, Ehret was also an accomplished botanist and entomologist. Hier die Tafeln N. 256 "Brassica cauliflora / Chou fleur / Käsekohl", N. 258 "Brassica capitata rubra / Chou cabu rouge/ Rother Kappis", N. 261 "Brassica alba crispa / Sawischer Krautkohl", N. 618 "Laburnum, seu Anagyris flore luteo [...] Krauser Salat". Est: $3,000 - $6,000

Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (German, 1683-1741).
