        Est: $2,000 - $2,500

ARTIST: WEILUC (Lucien-Henri Weil, 1873-1947) SIZE: 61 x 45 3/4 in./155 x 116.3 cm PRINTER: Société Nouvelles d’Art et Décoration, Paris DESCRIPTION: Clément was a hugely successful bicycle brand in France in the late 1800s, but in 1903, one of the family scions, Adolphe Clément, set up an auto workshop in the town of Mézières. There is a statue in the town of Bayard of a legendary knight who supposedly saved the city from an invasion in the 16th century, and Clément chose to name his car after him. He operated the factory until 1922. Weiluc quite frequently took a humorous approach to posters for clients who appreciated it; here, he makes the Bayard fly through the air with the greatest of ease, narrowly escaping an oncoming train. Le Frou-Frou : Maquette. 1900.

        Est: $20,000 - $25,000

Artist: WEILUC (Lucien-Henri Weil, 1873-1947) Size: 20 3/4 x 25 3/8 in./52.8 x 64.5 cm This handsigned, gouache and ink maquette by Weiluc is an original representation of one of the most famous, most witty, most flirtatious, most exquisitely French posters of all time. Le Frou-Frou was a satirical magazine that ran from the turn of the 20th century to World War I. Cappiello actually designed the poster for the first issue (No. 150), but it's this one, with legs disappearing within the pure white fantasy space of petticoats, the luxurious pillows, the languorous cigarette spelling out the name in smoke, and – most especially – the devastatingly seductive dart of eyes to our left, that will have us dreaming for many years to come. Est: $12,000 - $18,000

WEILUC (LUCIEN HENRI WEIL, 1873-1947) LE FROU FROU. 1900. 60 3/4x43 3/4 inches, 154 1/4x111 cm. La Lithographie Nouvelle, Asnieres. Condition B: restored losses, repaired tears and creases in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds. Le Frou Frou was a naughty humor magazine launched in 1900. From its inception, its aim was to titillate. The first poster they issued was designed by Cappiello, who presented a flirtatious can-can girl. Immediately afterwards, Weiluc was commissioned to create a new one and the result is a masterpiece of soft, turn-of-the-century eroticism in which a young woman, perhaps a dancing girl, is sitting on a sofa, with her legs protruding from her very visible petticoat. The contrast between the white linen of her undergarments and the black of her stockings and garters arrests the eye. More startling than her pose is the fact that she is smoking - an incredibly provocative act for a woman at that time. Weiluc transforms the smoke from that brazen cigarette into the title of the poster. Added to the carefree pose and the bravado of the smoke is the woman''s languorous gaze, all of which combine to create an exquisitely shocking (and arousing) poster for the period. Weiluc, who was a regular exhibitor at the Salon des Humoristes, and who became President of the Society of Humoristes in 1911, is well-regarded for his far less daring portraits of Parisian characters. This is the version before text in the bottom panel. From the Hans Sachs Collection, with the collector''s stamp on verso. DFP-II 874, Wine Spectator, pl. 64, Belle Epoque 164, Maitres 1900 p. 61 (var), Art Nouveau p. 130 (var), Cappiello / Rennert 1B.

FROU FROU - ORIGINAL VINTAGE AND RARE 1900 POSTER BY WEILUC

        Est: $40,000 - $50,000

In 1900, this image by Weiluc (Lucien-Henri Weil) graced the cover of the first edition of the famed "Le Frou Frou", a satirical humor magazine published in Paris. It was printed from 1900 until the outbreak of World War I. This original vintage poster was created to advertise the (then) new publication. Weiluc created few posters, and its muted color palette is rare among its brightly colored Belle Epoque counterparts. Over the years, it has become an exceptionally rare and highly sought after poster. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.
